Low pitched winding noise

I have a 2001 Ranger, 4.0-6cyl. 4x4. I have noticed a low pitched winding noise coming from my drivers side front whenever I turn. It doesn't matter which direction I turn, and it is worse at slower speeds (like when turing into a parking spot). I replaced the rotor and pads thinking that might be the problem, but the noise continues. I checked the wheel for any play, thinking it might be the bearing, but all checked out ok. Could it be a CV joint? Something in the front Diff? Any help would be great.

Thanks

Bad Bearing

After doing a little more searching around, I beleive it to be a bad wheel bearing. We'll take 'er apart and see. In the mean time, I'm still open for any other ideas.

rangerdriverforlife,

I have the same type of noise from my truck...worse the slower you go (actually...just easier to hear w/o wind and road noise, I think) Since I just bought it it's still under a power train warranty, so I'm gonna take it in this week and see what happens. I'll get back to you and tell you what they did...maybe it will help.

How about low fluid in the power steering pump? I'm guessing you mean "whining", like a high pitch noise?

Im no mechanic, but i would say power steering pump also. Mine does the same. It gets louder the sharper and slower i turn. My dad says it the power steering pump bout to go, but i have had the truck for a year now and she is still goin strong.

Welcome to the magic of Ford power steering pumps... I haven't heard one yet that didn't make that noise... You learn to live with it after awhile. Somebody on here once had a reason for it, something to do with a small internal leak that makes the noise.

I had the same problem with my 98 3.0 a while back. Got the power steering flushed and it seemed to go away for awhile. Its back though so I suppose I'm going to have to flush it again.

Thanks for the info...but...I don't think it's my power steering pump. It only makes the noise when I'm moving. I can be in ideling in park and turn the wheels and I don't get any noise. I guess I could also describe the noise as a "low rumble", like the sound of a flat tire, or a helecopter. I just had new tires put on, so I don't think it's them. I can also feel some vibration (more than usual) in the steering wheel. It only has 40,000 miles on it, so I can't imagine it being a wheel bearing. I'll check the power steering pump again though. Any more info would be of great help.

I just bought a 2003 ranger 4x4 and mine does the same thing. I actually thought it was only from the drivers side till I let a friend drive it and it was coming from both sides. I am guessing it is just the cv joints in the front making a vibration or a noise. My truck only has 4k miles on it.

That noise could be the driveshaft support bearing. I had mine on my ranger 98 dry up and make anoyning noises at low speeds for two years until it became louder and lifted one back wheel with the jack and turned the driveshaft by hand while in neutral and found exactly where the molesting noise came from. I always had the impresison that it came from the front wheels or hubs. Like a spring rubing the wheel. Replacement of this bearing at around $ 70 made the truck run like a charm. Cheers Karslake.

Hi,
What size tires did you have installed? Did it make this noise before the new tires?

i had my PSP replaced at 65000 miles. the haynes manual says the new pump will make a noise for at least 500 miles. its been at least 800 to 900 miles and still makes the noise.

Hey guys

Thanks for all the ideas. To answer Sugarlips' question, I had the same size tires installed. So there was no change there. I'll check the driveshaft support bering though.
