V-10 - need some feedback
Yes, fuel milage is different between the two, but not as significant(while pulling a heavy load) as some would lead you to believe. The choice is made more simple if you ask yourself a few questions:1. Will you drive the truck enough over its lifespan to justify the extra cost of the diesel? 2. In cold climates, the diesel engine takes significantly longer to warm up than the gas engine. 3. The noise and smell of the diesel. 4.Oil changes in a diesel can be very expensive. 5. Diesels have terrible hold-back on steep hills(little back pressure) and thereby go through expensive brakes and rotors more frequently. 6. Finally, resale after 5-7 years is irrelevant as both engines will exhibit wear regardless of engine design if used as intended.
Regardless, which one you choose, you are buying a superior truck compared to the competition. I know, I have lost more money on trade-in than anything else!
My Milage Is 10.5 City 12.50 Hwy. empty and Pulling My 19Ft. Stratos F/S Boat I get 9.5 City 11.5 Hwy. thats in IL. In wis. Minn.. Kentucy , Ten, Canada .I get 13.5 City 16 Hwy.empty. out of state i Get 14.5 City 15.5 Hwy Pulling. And it has no problem pulling.
My Wifes Truck Is A 2000 SD Crew Cab Short Bed 4 x 4 Lariat Diesel With 3 : 73 Gears. with 12000 Miles On it. I get 13.5 City 16 Hwy About the Same Pulling. Here in IL. But Every were else I get 16 City 20 Hwy.Pulling Or not. and in Ten. I was Getting 22.5 Hwy.
And I talk to Super Chip About the diesel They Guaranty 6 More MPG. Thats Next. But to the Point I think Gas Milage Really depends on were you Live . All the Milage I posted Is Off the Trip Computer. I Reset it At Every Fill Up.I think if your going to Keep a Truck over 4 Yrs And you pull anything. The diesel is the way to go. The Only problem i had with ether trucks is the 5.4 rotors warp At 45000 And ford replaced them for free. good luck they are great trucks.
and also I have traded my 99 v-10 reg cab in on a 00 PSD SC 4x4 8'bed auto 3.73LS I will fill it up tomorrow for the first time then I will have true numbers based on what my 99 got and what the 00 gets driving the same exact route.based on the fuel guage the 00 is winning
I have some real numbers as I just traded my 99 v-10 5 spd 4x4 4.30LS reg cab 8' bed in on a 00 PSD SC auto 4x4 3.73LS 8' bed
my mileage in the 99 averaged 10mpg around driving to and from work
my 00 following the same roads at the same speeds is getting 13mpg as of the first fillup
as soon as the snow clears up i will hook up my 5000lb trailer and see if my PSD can beat the 8mpg the v-10 got the last time I pulled the trailer?????????
It is brand new on 2 months old and has been at the dealer 5 times so far. The exhaust makes a noise as if it is leaking, the doors rattle like crazy, the cruise contol actually makes a scraping noise when its on, The front end vibrates, the drivers side seat rocks like its loose, the alarm constantly goes off when unlocking it, the interior trim is kinda cheap, I got leather and they neglect to tell you that the back seat is vinyl not leather. My friend has a chevy 2500HD and it is a far superior vehicle in every way.
Just thought I would warn you.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I just bought 01 250 SD 4X4 Crew cab V10. I got the v10 because it would have taken the dealership an extra 45-60 days to get my truck in w a power stroke. I orderd this truck in june 00 w/ the power stroke but they messsed up the order 2 times and I was tired of waiting so they talked me into a v10. First thing I did was put a 4" lift kit and new 35x12.50x16.5 tires on a 16x9.75 in wheel. I didn't get a chance to check the mileage when it was stock, but now with the modifications I get around 10 city/12 hwy. Overall I am very pleased with the engine just really stinks on mileage. I do enjoy the quietness over the diesel and also don't miss the smell. My wife and I ran the numbers on diesel vs gas and we couldn't get the deisel to make sense economically over the span of time I plan to keep this truck. So if you don't mind filling up your tank every 225-250 miles (me) then get the v10. It has enough power to pull anything, I am from a farming community and all we have and all you will see are 250/350 SD 4x4's, some gas some diesel, they can both easily pull 3 loaded peanut trailers out of the field. You wont find a tougher or better looking truck out there, all the others are playing ketchup, they are cheap imitations of a true truck. FORD TOUGH aint no lie!!! Sorry this was so long. See ya, jimmyb.

Sorry for the timing on this, just starting to shop for a 250.
What weight are you towing and what kind of terrain?
Is 5.4 w/ 4.10 really enough?
I'll be pulling <>6500# occassionally (8-10x/yr); mostly grades and mtn. driving (getting away from LA-Ca, not the southeast). The truck is mostly for commuting; <>55miles/day, freeway stop-n-go.
What transmission do you have on each?
