V-10 - need some feedback

With a Y2K truck I can't discuss reliability yet but in the first three months my V10 automatic with the 4.3 rearend has been getting 14 in mixed driving 15-16 highway and 10-12 with a three horse gooseneck trailer. (This is my first automatic and the only time I miss the five speed is down shiftin on steep hills.) It tows great and it has enough power to pass at will. Check out the Ford tow ratings- the F250 V10 has a higher rating than the Powersroke and even at 300,000 miles the 2 or 3 mpg better mileage for the PSD will never makeup the $4,500 price differenc.

V-10 - need some feedback

I've had a cold start knock for some time now.(28000 miles, 1 yr old) Took it into dealer for recalls and other small things. I mentioned the cold start knocking and the mechanics verified the knocking and put on the repair order "order new engine" and then "none available until after Jan 2000" For one thing, I am glad that this didn't turn into a me vs. Ford arguement. Also, I am very pleased with everything about my truck and would still recomend it to anyone. And, no, I won't be getting a 310hp 2000 engine..... : (

All these posts about the differences between the PSDs and the V10s leave out one important point. The RESALE VALUE on a PSD will be miles ahead of the V10 after putting 100K on it. So the net effect of the $4500 for the diesel will be only a few hundred bucks over the 100K miles. And as for the few hundred bucks, you'll make it up in mileage savings. So the only remaining issue is the higher maintenance costs.

I have talked to a friend of mine that has worked for ford engering and was told that ford built into the computer chip for the trans that reconnizes when there is a low on the truck and automatidally extends the time of shift

LAST EDITED ON 02-Jan-01 AT 04:55 PM (EST)[p]Well, the V-10 is a great motor. TONS of pulling power with the Auto.

However, I have to 'second' the motion for a bigger fuel tank. We have a short wheel base 4x4, with 3.73 gears. When we were not pulling a lot, not a big deal. Then we got interested in team penning this summer and pulled 6000+ lbs several times a week.

We had a lot of big hills on our trip....again, no problem keeping 70. However, 170 mile range on a full tank bites.

Needed a new fuel pump at 20,000 miles, probably because we waited till the light came on before filling up. (pump is not cooled well when the fuel level is low)

With 24,000 miles on our 2000, we are just today started shopping for a Diesel. (engine life is got to be better when you don't have to run 3000-4000 RPM all of the time)

V-10 is great...however, leave frequent towing to the PSD. (in my opinion)

Just my .02

Kurt

Sounds like you have a pretty good idea about how to run a V-10. I just bought '99 CC longbed 12/24 with 30k miles on it. I changed the oil first thing, using what I've always used in all of my vehicles, Mobil 1 15/50. I'm a little alarmed that it appears that I've lost a quart in my first 1,000 miles. Would the light weight oil you recommend help, or do you think I have a bigger problem here? Has anyone else had thsi experience, and if so, does Ford do anything about it?

Man, you must cut the key off and let that thing coast down every hill. I've got the V-10 with 4.3s and experience 8/11 city/highway, and around 7 towing. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving every minite of it. I just would'nt want the guy who asked the question to expect 14 to 16 in a 4.3 epuipped V-10

I currantly have a early 99 sd v-10 5 spd 4.30LS rear 4x4
the gas mileage sucks 10-11 around town maybe 13 on the road I have gotten as little as 7 pulling a 5000lb trailer on the highway
empty it has a lot of acceleration
as for towing it will pull good on the flat but on hills it slows way down unless you can get a run for it and maintain speed
but around here we have lots of windy hills
I have personally seen a 96PSD pull a 10000lb trailer, while is was pulling my 5000lb trailer and i couldnt keep up to him
I am now looking at 2000 leftover PSD auto xlt sc 8, bed

Man of man,

Fast Forward, buy your own numbers ($5300) I can purchase 4,380 gallons of gas(based on my last fillup, $1.21) with the extra cost of a PSD and the goodies you mentioned. Or I can translate that to 48,180 miles based on my 11 mpg average. I can go further and translate that to 4.8 years of driving(based on my last 4 years of driving habits). Not to shabby.

One can go a step further and say "..OK the PSD gets better mileage". Say the PSD does get better mileage, my last fillup gas was $1.21 and diesel was $1.45, or about 17% greater fuel costs. Say the PSD get 15 and I get 11, the PSD gets about 27% better mileage. So you get a little better mileage but you pay more for fuel. Now maintance, I refill with 6 qts of oil. I believe the PSD holds 14-15. Now I've heard some say "..well I've had my oil tested and I could go 8k before a change". Well I bet I could have my oil tested and find out the same thing. I think my manual says 8k or something, I change mine every 3k.

Another thing on mileage, I've read the stories about the guys who get 20mpg(ok yeah right, stay with me) on the freeway empty doing 55. So now we're on a 500 mile trip to grandma's house, it's going to take you 9.1 hours at 55mpg vs 7.1 at 70mpg(I'm getting about 12mpg and your getting 20mph). Well you know what the kids got hungry during that extra 2 hours and couldn't wait for grandma to supply dinner so you had to drop an extra $20 at Mickie D's. Plus everyone now has to pee 30 minutes later so there's an extra stop and more lost time. Personally I've never passed a SD PSD while he was doing 55.

TS, Regarding the RESALE VALUE thing, sorry to burst your bubble but if you have 2 10 year old SD's with 200k on them on a lot they'll be priced the same in like condition. Why, cuz it's a wholesale truck and no one with credit will buy them. Do the same thing with 5 year old trucks and the PSD might be a few hundred more but not your $4500 up front money. Here is one more for you, every one says the PSD will outlast a gasser by 2-1, so now on the lot we have 2 like trucks, but the PSD has 300K on it and the V-10 has 150k on it, which one would you think most people will buy..of course the one with less miles(even though both engines are about ready for a rebuild, remember 2-1). If you trade your truck every year you'll still never recoup the money because you'll be replacing a PSD with a PSD so you never "cash in" on the extra costs, unless of course you trade a PSD for a gasser.

Ok Mike that's done, you see what I have, I'm very happy. I tow or carry a 600# atv from time to time. You can see my mileage. I've had no problems with about 28k on it. If you tow heavy and often, get a PSD, if not a gasser is fine. and you save money.

I have to agree with most of what rob_n_houston says. Unless you want to order a truck and wait forever, your looking at buying off the lot. Around here you couldn't touch a PSD for less than $6,500 more than the V10 because of all the extras included on it. I'm not sure what the previous towers expected, but I pull a 5000# camper and a 7500#flatbed with a tractor on it. So far I have to keep an eye on the mirror to make sure I'm even pulling anything. While I haven't had to climb a mountain yet, I've had no trouble with the hills in southern Indiana.

I get 11-12 mpg around town and 10+ when i'm towing. I'm happy its right where I expected to be.

Boy, y'all need to pull some knives out of each others back!!Somebody asked for info and then y'all start calling those people liars. That is not helpfull. That is childish. I am looking at buying a 350 when I get out of school this year I would love some feed back but with so much " your lying and your wrong" Why would I ask? You also have to remember that everyone on here is from ALL over the country, so they drive in differant coditions and that ( I think ) would make a differance. He might have gotten a perfect engine, who knows, My mom once bought a car that the tires on it still had good tread at 80k miles.

Newb v10,
Your right about the order thing. Here in Texas all(most) I see at the dealers is the PSD. Two reasons for this IMO, 1)popular engine and 2) there's more markup to be made with the PSD. Sort of like the Lariets have more markup than the XL's.

catdaddy,

Maybe you should join a debate class before you leave school so you'll understand what is going here. We're not backstabbing anyone(duh), we're confronting them on the facts as each of us believe them to be in an "eFace to eFace" format. I like most try to back them with facts and examples to help people understand where I'm coming from. I did doublecheck my math.

If you want feedback then you better ask. It's up to you to make the final decision, no one is holding a gun to your head.

And I would certainly keep MY Mother out of any of this! I also see this is your first post...you'll get the hang of it soon.

Rob

catdaddy,

See you'll get the hang of it. You sound like a bright kid. I'm not sure if you were about to get out of Jr. high, High School, or College, but you missed it again. I never mentioned your mother.....I mentioned MY mother. Oops. You need to learn what a means.

And who has the perfect engine, I still missed that.

When you get closer to purchasing a 350 come back and you can learn from our mistakes. That's why we're really so uptight around here.

Also don't take this so personal. This is the Internet, one of the most impersonal things in the world. You see, I'm just a 9 year old boy from India learning English via these forums, I've never even seen a SD.
