I have 98 Ranger XL (2.5L 4cyl) with 120K miles. Truck drives like a tank - however when I start the truck 1st thing in the morning, once it turns over, a "clank-clank" noise heard. No problems starting or idling and if re-started various times during the day/night, it does not happen. It used to be one "clank" noise for months, now it's two. Any suggestions, ideas? Or am I worrying about nothing given the milage?
What xmsn do you have? Does it sound like the clank is coming from the engine, under your feet, or farther back. Can you feel clanking or just hear it? Have you had someone else start it while you were "under the hood". And can you be a little more specific about what a "clank" is, like low or high pitched; sledge hammer under the hood; tick-tick, etc. That would help. Thanks.
Sometimes the bendix [sp?] on the starter gets dirty and doesn't disengage when cold. If this is what your talking about you can either replace the starter or take yours out and clean the bendix. Is the noise while your turning the key or when you shift into gear or just while the engine is idling?
In my case, it's heard 1/2 second after I release the key. Mine is more of a clicking than a clank.
Do you think it's a matter of dirt, and not just the grease thickening? I'd hate to replace it, or work on it, and find out this noise is typical below 20F.
I would ignore it all together, but I'm concerned it could eventually chew up the flywheel teeth.
Its not normal for your things to make unusual sounds. I'd have someone start it while you have the hood open and listen for where it comes from. If it comes from the starter you need to take it off and inspect it to make sure its okay.
