amp tuning

Well i installed the new cd player and subs in the truck wednesday and i have been tinkering with it but i'd figure you guys might help.

The amp has power gain screw, bass boost screw, 0-12db, and an adjustable crossover 40-400k.

I have the bass boost to about 3 or 4 db of boost.
The power is up half way, and the crossover is set on about 80 or so. It sounds real good till i get up to about 80% volume, granted that's louder than i'll have it, but i get a definite hard distortion at that volume.
The sub says it's a 400w. I have about 800w going to it. Is there a chance that i am overpowering it with the power only half way up? or is it just distortion? I'd like to get it fixed cause i wanna jam at lower levels and not have it sound like a cardboard box at the high volume.
Any reply would be appreciated, I just don't know how to tune this car stuff.

How did you set the gains on the amp? If you set them so the amp delivers max, unclipped power, then using ANY bass boost is going to clip the signal. Add to the fact that you are feeding the sub twice as much power as is recommended, and you're looking at a blown sub...right around the corner.

A few quick questions, though:

What sub is it?
What type of enclosure is it in (ported/sealed/bandpass/etc.)?
What amp is it?
What position is the gain/sensitivity at?
What method did you use to set the gains?

Achieving more low end oomph is usually attributed to better (or correct) box design, a better sub (sometimes), and sometimes correct sub placement.

Your defeinetly asking for trouble feeding that much over the rated sub. Also in addition to above questions, how is the amp connected? RCA or line level inputs.

setting the gain

to set the gain turn it all the way down.
turn the head unit 3/4`s the way up.
turn the gain up till it starts to clip(or distort).
then back off just a hair.
as for the bass boost it depends on your box.
thats whats it there for.
as far as the power on the woofer it aways better
to go the other way.less amp than woffer.
and if it a cheap amp it want make 800w.
if it`s a cheap woffer it want take 400w.
so in the future better brands make better sound and more
wattage.and stay away from anything sony and head units
made by kenwood.this are the ones that come to my shop
more than any other.
