I'm almost done rebuilding my 400, its bored .40 over, i had my heads ported and polished, new valves and springs cam intake carb but now i want to replace the stock rockers with roller rockers, but the only ones ive found so far are the Gold Series Race billet aluminum ones and there $309. I really dont want to spend that kind of money. Do any of you guys know of any other roller rockers i can use?
I have almost the same work done as you and am just beginning to assemble my engine now. I got a set of Scorpion rockers which go right on the stock pedestals without maching or using guidplates or hardened pusrods. There are some on Ebay right now at $215. They are the same as 351c. The other option is FMS but I don't know haow much they cost. Comp cams also makes a roller fulcrum which is kinda halfway but still better than stock.
The scorpion units are nice. I have a set I bought a year ago still in the box. They are less expensive overall than the stud mount units since they do not require machining, guide plates, or hardened pushrods. They are also more stable than cheby type wobble rockers.
Crane Roller Rockers for a BBC work great...and won't break your bank. Crane's screw in stud kit will be needed for this conversion. I feel its well worth it. I was told by a 'Stang mechanic that the BBC rockers work fine for the street. Screw-in stud kit comes with guideplates, just need to get the hardened pushrods...which i need to do also.
Crane Energizer Roller Rockers CRN-13744-16 1.7:1 ratio list on Summit Racing for $195.95. You will need a Crane Pedestal mount conversion kit, CRN-52655-16 with these rockers, but your stock pushrods should work.
Summit Racing sells the FMS Roller Rockers. Mine cost $259. I am very happy with how well they installed and have performed. I hear good things on this and other boards about the Scorpions too. Remember either of these options are "non-adjustable". You have to use shim kits to set preload. No big deal. I had .017" total off my heads/block deck and run the .030" shim and all is well. Either would be worth the money over stock...
just some info, have seen crane energizers break on stock eng, not as strong as other aluminums, harland sharps through summit around $200, very strong
The Scorpion units are rated for use with 800# springs so they should work OK. They don't say for how long tho... -I don't think anything aluminum is as durable as steel tho.
I ran the "cheap" Crane alum. rockers for 80,000 + miles on my last engine. I still have the set for spares but have never needed to use them. Running the same thing on my roller cam engine.
The rods are cheap at summit and are already hardened anyway. I bought a set for my 351C 2V for about $30. I was looking to install the roller rockers but was told that with the setup I have I was only adding about 10 to 15 HP for about $500 since I could not find pedestal mount roller rockers for my clevelad.
