I'm sure this question gets asked a lot, and i've found lots of good info on how to determine what transmission it is by what truck it is in. But I have a 4 spd manual transmission that I have no idea what it came out of. I think it might be from a Ford but not positive. The shifter comes out of the top of the case, not on levers on the side like a Chevy 4 spd. There is also a number that starts with a T but I didn't write down the rest of the number. What do I need to do to find out exactly what transmission this is?
What is the shift pattern? Is the transmission cast iron or aluminum? Is the shifter plate cast iron or aluminum? Just a general description should start leading the way.
Need more input, too. Whether it has overdrive or not, location of I.D. tag (top or side), rest of the numbers, and the shift pattern will be the ticket for sure. Could be a T-18, T-19, or NP435. A pic in your gallery would be nice!
OK, a little more info here. Its got 4 foreward gears
1 3
2 4 R
Thats what the shift pattern looks like. I could have 1 and 2 mixed up, but by turning the shaft I know reverse is in the right place. On the passanger side it says Borg Warner, under that it says Muncie. Looks like a small inspection plate on both sides at the bottom. I also wrote down the number on top right behind the shift lever, but somehow I misplaced it, oops. Pretty sure it had T-19 and some other stuff behind that. Also took a couple of pics, when I get them developed tomorrow and get the CD, I should be able to post it if I can figure out how.
Its definately a Borg Warner T-19. But the Muncie part puzzles me. Its a decent transmission. There is no overdrive and like 78fordman said, 1st gear is synchronized and is not as low as the T-18.
