The only two 4-speeds I've known to be behind FE's are T18's or a New Process 435.
...has it been swapped to a T19? ...synchronized in first and reverse?
Avoid the mustang T5s. They could barely handle the power from the 5.0. They also will not bolt up to a 390 without some tomfoolery. The easy way to tell which 4 speed you have, NP435 has an aluminum cover, t18-19 has a cast cover. The t18-19 also has a screw on shifter retainer, the 435 has one you have to push down and twist to get out. Other dead giveaways, the numbers on the side.
T18=1301
T19=1309 The diesel and gas versions have different first gear ratios as well, varying from 4:1 to almost 7:1
NP=has a NP inside of a gear.
I could be wrong but...IIRC, the T-18 has reverse over and up, the NP435 is over and down...I believe the T-19 was also over and down for reverse, but I that would have been swapped in.
According to another site which we can't mention...(think fortifications) the NP 435 is over and down for R. As previously noted, aluminum top cover also id's this box.
T 18 from '66 to '78 shift over and up for R, later over and down. They list the T18 from '65-'85. Note the reference of '66 or '65 as a start date, as listed on that site I can't mention. Certainly there are other sources for this info.
T 19 = synchro first, as per prev. post. It also seems both the T19 & 18 were offered side by side for several model years, as they list the T19 from '74 to '88.
"Borg Warner T18 ...Used in Ford trucks 1956-73..."
Ooops. ;)
My '75 F150 came with the T18 and my buddy's "no bed" '76 F350 did too.
(he made a cattle hauler out of it)
Doggonit, his daughter's '75 F350/460/mush box stock trailer hauler went
belly-up and they put "my;)" 360/T18 in it ...then her truck got stolen and
we've never seen it again. "my spare FE and T18 went south :)"
