Question Rear Main Seal

I've got a 1995 f-150 4x4 with the 302 in it and I've got a leaking rear main seal....atleast I think thats whats wrong, b/c I've got oil leaking ito the bell housing. I was just curious whats the best way to go about changing that seal.....any suggestions or tips would be greatly apreciated.

drop the tranny or slide it back, remove the flexplate/flywheel, punch two holes into the seal, insert two machine screws and pry it out, insert new seal. Simple process but it will take you forever, that seal will put up a fight. have fun

1995 351

My father's 1995 F150 351 V8 has a similar leak...the gasket on the pan looks ok and there appears to be no leaking from the valve covers or filter but there is oil on the tranny bell housing and it drips down onto his driveway right below the bell housing. I'd say he loses at the most 1 quart in between oil changes ( alot of that is probably burned in consumption too)...I change the oil on it every 6 months, it rarely gets 2,500 miles on it in that time period. Is a leak in the rear main a MAJOR concern? My father basically only drives the truck on the freeway from Phoenix to Tucson or to the local masonry yard on weekends. Will the leak do long term damage to the truck? I know replacing the seal (if that's where the leak is) is beyond my ability and I know he doesn't want to replace it (for $$$ reasons) unless he has too.

there is a special seal driver, but used a block of wood and then slowly tapped it flush, worked fine. As far as cost, its $10 for the seal + a whole lot of time. later

It's easier to remove and replace the seal (but more time and effort ) if you drop the pan and loosen the rear main bearing cap , then the seal comes out and goes in easily BUT normally if the seal starts to leak there is a groove worn in the crank and the next seal will leak very soon, you can by a sleeve and install it but it's not easy out of the truck and I'm sure it would be hell in the truck.
