Newbie

I will be trading off my Chevy at the end of the month. It was a 1500 regular cab Z71, lasted about 58k. Got about 14 in town and 18 on the highway (that was a good day).

I am looking at an F-250 V10 with under 5,000 miles CC. I wanted to go Diesel but I only drive 2.8 miles to work everyday, I know that I would score a piston within a year but ANYWAY back to the V10.

I know about the plug issue (was that fixed in 03?). I know the mileage will be around 11 city and 14 highway. What I don't know is which lift is good (I heard the edge but they seem to be more than the chevy IFS lifts) What about Superlift and SkyJacker?

I plan on a 4" with 33 - 35 BFG muds. I do want to plow with this truck so I am assuming they (probably WESTERN) make a drop kit. How do these trucks plow? How do they perform offroad?

Look for standard hubs? Or the Auto's are "ok"? Manual transfer case or electric? Posi is a must but do I go 3.73 or 4.10's?

I don't do much off road but I like to know it's their and when I want to go (say when I am out hunting) I want it to GO! You know what I mean....

So educate this Chevy man. BTW I am not going to return to GM because my brother had a 6.0 cold start knocker and now my 5.3 is the same freaking way. He went Hemi I am going Ford so post on my new best friends!!

Hi Watz, and welcome to club FTE. I myself have a 2001 V10 with 3.73 gears and it is perfect for me.

Welcome watz!

Reply here so that I can move this to the Super Duty forum. Since you're new I want to make sure you know where it is going to be moved to.

I want to move it for basically 2 reasons.

1. This forum is for issues that deal directly to the V10.

2. You'll have lots of great responses from the Super Duty forum.

Enjoy your stay here at FTE! Hope you're around for a long, long time!

Thanks for the help.

Hope to here more, I did a search but I can't find a whole lot of information comparing lifts. Edge is about 1,100 dollars more than superlift is their a reason? Is it worth the extra cash?

How many have ahd problems lifting their trucks? Issues after? I want to lift my truck ASAP so I want to know what to look for (voiding warrenty, yea I know about the they need to prove it was the lift issue, but I would rather not deal with it).

Welcome aboard and like you, I'm a former GM owner with enough of the chebby's.

Best advice I can give you about which lift is good is for you to ride in various SD trucks with the different brand of lifts. For the most part, you get what you pay for. Almost any brand will have a strong following, as do the different brands of trucks. It really depends on what you find you're comfortable with. After riding in 4 different SD with different brand lifts kits, I've decided on the Edge because it appears strongest and best riding of all. Yes, it may be more expensive then others, but I want what suits me.

On second thought, maybe I shouldn't move this. Once you mention Edge things can get heated quickly.

Unless you find a person who has or has had both lift brands (on the same truck) then you'd be hard pressed to find facts. Only opinions.

As far as the other questions...let's see what others have to say.

Welcome to the site.

Between Superlift and Skyjacker the Superlift will ride better.....I thought that the Skyjacker bracketry was better built. Not sure which one would be best for plowing to support the additional weight of the plow thouigh...... I'd recommend Bilstein 5100s that are valved specifically for the SD with either lift to improve the ride though.

I have the electic shift transfer case and auto hubs and haven't had any issues, but I do use my 4x4 at least a couple times a month. Some others here have had issues with the electric t-case and auto hubs though.......mainly the auto hubs.

The manual t-case and manual hub setup is much more reliable.

If you are getting the V10 I think that your options are the 3.73 or 4.30s.......I'd probably take a truck with the 4.30s since you are going to go to bigger tires and plow.

I think that the trucks do fairly well off road when properly equipped considering the size and weight of them.

Regarding the cost difference in Edge vs. Superlift it depends on what system you are pricing out and what options you get.....i.e. dual Bilstein 5100s ($75 per shock), front and rear leaf sprigns shock hoops, etc. The Edge are well built and made in the USA...including the leaf springs.

Just my $.02

Hope this helps.

Welcome to FTE!

Ken - you're a buzzkill.... I wanted to find my daily flame war and you've already dumped a bucket of water on the whole mess - bummer.

Can't speak of the V10, but regarding the lift you're probably OK with stock wheels and 33's as they come. Going to 35's you'll need 4+ inches and my experience is that a good mulitleaf pack with a set of good gas shocks is a decent all around setup. My four inch lift cost ~$1200 installed with a pair of oil shocks, which I've since replaced with a $300 set of Bilstein 5100's - the ride is sweet and I could clear 35's on a set of wheels with factory backspacing.

Mine came with auto hubs and electronic x-fer case (don't all automatics?) - never a problem with engagement.

Watz

I'll just touch on the plow part of your question.
I run a Western with a 8"Super Lift, it was a major pita to get the plow to sit level. I have a thread around here , explaining exactly what I had to do to make it work.

With a 4" lift, there should be just enough adjustment on the frame to work BUT, I don't think the plow will be level, if your also run bigger tires. My sugestion would be to run the stock tires in the winter.

You can see pics of what mine looks like in the winter as compared to summer in my gallery.

If you are plowing with it, i think 4.10's would be a better choice. Ford has solid front axles, much easier lifting than a IFS system. Go with the manual 4x4 system, i just had a transfer case motor go out, and what a pain. The hubs are not really a choice i do not think. They are auto/mans. They will automaticly engage when you move the lever, but if for some reason the front hubs do not engage, you can manually lock them in. You can not manually unlock them though, just put them in auto and hope they do.

BTW, your can only get 3.73 or 4.30 with the V10.

As for your other two questions...

MY vote is

1. Standard
2. Manual

Manual is manual. Get out and lock your hubs and manually lock your tranfer case.

ESOF will lock your hubs via a vacuum pulse and electronically lock the transfer case.

Fords don't let you manually lock your X-fer case and automatically lock your hubs.

The older f250's had it in the late 90's, because my buddies 97 came with a floor shifter and auto hubs, but the Superduties must be different, sorry about that. If i'm not mistaken, ford is the last manufactorer to ship their 3/4 and 1 ton trucks with available manual locking hubs then correct?
