Manifold Question

I have a 1978 F-150 with a 460. I had a Carb put on a while back it is a Edelbrock 1406 600cfm, was wondering if some other manifold out there was better than the stock one on it now. I know I WILL NEVER get better gas millage but wanted to know about power.. we can all use that. I'm putting a new motor in and was wondering about the Mainifold if it might help anything or just to stay stock.

Thanks any help will help

600 seams kinda small for a 460, i run a 750 on my 390 and has power when you want it and about 13 MPG. I do not know the techs of the engine because i purchased it with the motor already built. As walt80 said, headers and dual exhaust, a manifold will help a little, i changed mine because the stock 4-v intake for the FE series weighed about 70 pounds.

I did the same to my 390, got rid of all that extra weight. Don't know if it makes it go faster, but it's easier to work on and it looks good!
As for the 460, those intake manifolds are pretty free flowing right from the factory, hence the large round ports. A little polishing and it's as good or better than any aftermarket intake.

Whoa, thats pushing it a bit far.

Anyways, you'll want to go with an 8012 Stealth. As mentioned, freeing up your exhaust will help too. 460s are especially bottlenecked on the exhaust side of things.

I saw some dyno tests a few years back and the stock iron 460 manifold outperformed the edelbrock and weiand aluminum manifolds at high rpms. The reviewer thought it might be that notch under the secondaries in the plenum divider. So if you get an aluminum manifold and notch it you might get the same performence and light weight. The only place the stock manifold did better than the aluminum manifolds was at high rpm's where the engine may have been able to pull from both sides of the carb. Otherwise at other speeds they all performed the same. Dual plane manifolds were the only ones tested.

I swapped my stock manifold and carb on a 83 460 to a 750 cfm edelbrock 1411 and a Stealth intake. It really made a difference. It gave me more low range power, but the biggest gain is between 2000-4000 rpm. Its got alot more passing power and hill climbs like a raped ape.

I have a simple little program that calculates carb size, and it says that 625 CFM is perfect for a stock 460. It is quite simple, and doesn't take any factors into account except cubic inches and stated horsepower.

I think 750 CFM is overkill for any street engine that's basically stock. It's doubtful if you can even use all that flow unless you open up the intake and exhaust.

If I remember right the manifold test that Torque 1st is talking about was done with a SCJ intake. They are alot different than a regular 429-460 intake.
