Im thinking of rebuilding my 302 but i dont know how much it will cost and what parts to use. just wondering what would be cheaper to buy a crate or just rebuild my 302 by replacing every thing but the block what do u guys think?
keep your block, rods, and crank. You can get a master rebuild kit for under 400. Machine work for the block and heads will be $500 or under So it can be rebuilt for less than $1000. I havn't seen many crate motors for under 2500. unless your talking about a reman engine then you can get a long block for under 1500.
Nah you can get a quality rebuilt 302 for around $850 plus orignal core. If you want extras just buy them and have the rebuilder install them intstead of their parts and they will subtract accordingly. Ed
Just my 2 cents - a good reman long block is probably the best compromise for warranty, durability, cost, and down time. I paid about $1250 for a Mustang HO long block for my Bronco, and it really made a difference - after pulling the old motor out, it was damaged too severely to be reused - not by me!! I bought it cheap because of the engine!! But it saved a lot of time at the machine shop, debate about what to re-use and what to replace, and it has a warranty. Research in your area, and find a rebuilder registered with AERA. I live near LA, and I found a highly rated rebuilder registered with these guys. I've not had a problem with the truck since, though it carries a three year unlimited miles warranty - Even though "stuff" happens, a business has got to have a pretty good product to begin with to offer such a good warranty.
