This question is in regards to a quite lengthy thread on disabling the 4 wheel drive on our trucks. I was looking for a OE way of doing this mod as I don't mind spending the money to have it look and function like a factory 2H option. My question is this.... Does anybody know what else this GEM module controls? I was at the dealer today picking up some parts for another project and out of curiosity I asked a buddy of mine who works there to look up the part numbers on a 98' GEM and a 2K GEM. The part numbers are different. I was going to try to replace the GEM module and put in the switch assembly from the 98' to the tune of 101.19 for the GEM and 18.67 for the switch; total with tax; 127.95 to obtain the 2H option on my 2K EB. Before I do this though I want to know what this GEM controls. BTW those are net prices on those parts. List is waaay higher, man I can't believe the markups.....
In a word, everything. It controls the air ride, antilock system, and has a part in controlling alot of others. I looked into it and some of the connections were not listed on the earlier models that where listed on the 2000. Its worth a try if they will allow returns if it doesn't work. I'll ask around and see if any friends at dealer know.
I got word today, it won't work. The new gem is for the new style abs and if you change, the abs and other systems might not work properly. Also, my guy at ford said it shouldn't hurt the clutch packs but there is a possiblility by pulling the fuse. He did say, that the front end stuff will still cause the friction, so no apparent gain in MPG.
Sounds good. Thanks for the info I really appreciate it. I guess if I want 2H I will have to do what Sucktin did and wire it with a switch. I don't really want it that bad though, due to no increase in mileage. I just wanted to have more fun , and AWD strips me of that!
