On a second thought, if you have, or can come by the inexpensive ELM scantool, running FORScan, or the like software on the viewing device of your choice, have it scan the vehicle computers/controllers for trouble codes & post All code Number clues, before throwing parts at the problem. If you've already performed a scan, post up All code Numbers you have.
In answer to your tranny/4x4 questions in the 00B40 recall program thread, Yes the GEM, auto tranny & 4X4 are associated, so if your having tranny shifting problems, the GEM belongs on your suspect list, along with the TRS & associated wiring & shift linkage, as you said the tranny had been recently replaced.
On the 4X4 question, the vacuum lines to vacuum operated hubs are common problem items, so if your having 4X4 engagement problems have a look there.
On deciphering the VIN # question, did you use this sites VIN decoder???? It can be accessed by clicking on the "Tools" button drop down in the black bar at the top of this page.
More thoughts for pondering, maybe others reading this thread will chime in.
