My Speedometer and Odometer stopped working at the same time, so I am about to go get that checked. I was wondering about another symptom that popped up at the same time. When I start it up, it runs fine until the first time it shifts to 3rd. It is very reluctant to shift and as soon as it makes that first shift, the OD Off light comes on. It flashes until I stop and turn off the truck. The next time it is driven, it is the same thing. Is this possibly all the speed sensor?
its a 95 explorer limited 4x4, a few months back it was giving a trouble indication of incorrect gear ratio after 3rd was commanded which seemed to clear with a fluid flush and filter change. Speed sensor sounds cheap, is this something fairly easy; should I take it in or lift it and change myself?
The spped sensor is real easy. I replaced mine and I am a girllll. It is on the rear of the tranny on the drivers side. I think it is a 10 or 11 mm socket. Expect a bit of fliud to drain. I think it costs about $25.00. You will need to push in the sides of the old one to remove the gears and install on new one. Slide into hole and put bolt back in. Done!!! If your speedometer is workinng right you did it correctly.
Might be worth while to just remove the connector on the speed sensor and reconnect it in case it is a corrosion problem. It is easy enough to get at on the side of the transfer case. Remove sensor first and inspect the plastic gear. Some have reported this cracking. New speed sensor will not come with a gear and you will have to transfer it.
The location on my 94 Ford F150 was on the top front of the rear differential. I did not have to remove mine since my problem was obvious, the wire to it were broken. I spliced the wires and all is well. I guess the wires simply broke after 10+ years of swinging. I used extra wire ties to pevent some of the movement and swing of the wires.
