code po446 help

i have a 98 explorer check engine light is on brought up code po446 any help

Used the search for you, the code po446 is "Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction"
Feel free to do some more forum searches to see exactly what to look for to clear this up.

The most likely causes are:
1. Leaking fuel cap O-ring
2. Bad/corroded purge valve (located over spare tire)

I'd check the fuel cap first.....

I have the same problem (P0446) and I got the same response on what to check to fix the problem. In the morning I'm going to get a new gas cap.

In some high rust areas of the country the evap solenoid above the spare tire rusts to pieces. A good clue is how rusted the platform that hold this and the canisters above the spare tire. My mounting plate was rusted to the point that you could bend it with your fingers in places. Powder coat is worse than no paint for protection. The valve looked just as bad. $36 from dealer and easy to replace. If this area looks bad, the valve probably is. Valve is normally open with no power so you have to apply power to test it.

Thanks for the info. I droped the plate above the spare tire and cleaned the filter on the valve that was clogged with road scum and dirt. Reinstalled and cleared the code and have had no codes in 10 days of operation. Thanks for the info.
