squealing engine, camshaft position sensor?

I have a 96 explorer with a 4.0 pushrod v6. I have been having a squealing noise coming from the engine during warmup and during some driving (trust me its not the belt or pulleys). I took it to the dealer after repeatedly trying to diagnos the prob myself. The dealer says it is the camshaft position sensor. Could this be? Need help bad I don't want to buy the part and replace it for nothin. by the way dealer wants 600 for it!! thanx

I have a '96 with the 5.0 and had the cam position sensor replaced for squealing. I'm not exactly sure about the 4.0. For the 5.0 engine the Ford shop manual notes - severe engine damage can result if cam position sensor is not aligned correctly, and the manual shows a tool for such alignment. I had the dealer replace mine, I was a chicken, and both the part and labor were under $300. Be very careful in noting and marking the current position of the existing sensor before you remove it.

No problems, I replaced the cam position sensor and the cam synchronizor and its fixed. When I took out the old sycronizor i knew right away it was the prob. I think the oil holes got clogged and the bearings were shot making it squeak and grind.

the camshaft position sensor and synchronizor was located on the back of my engine on my 96 4.0 liter. You have to remove the upper intake (very easy). Next remove the fuel rail (only if you are replacing the sychronizor if just the sensor then you can get to it without taking the fuel rail off) to gain visibility. The sensor comes off with a plug a two screws (super easy no way to mess it up) and the new one just goes back on in reverse. If you have to replace the synchro then you have to take off the sensor and mark were the synchro is positioned to put the new one in correct timing. That is the hard part because you can hardley see down there. I used a mirror to see it. be patient and youll get it.
