Hi guys, new to the forum. I recently bought a used F-350 with a V10. It is a 2000 lariat crew cab long bed 4x4 with the v10 and an automatic transmission. It has 130,000 mile on it. I have noticed in one spot where i have to run at 45mph for a while and then get up to 55 up a hill slowly, it feels like the transmission is hunting for hte right gear or possibly slipping back and forth form one gear to another. it does this once in a while in other places. just wondering if an of you guys might have had this problem.
My 2001 V-10/auto with 30,000 miles is doing something similar...
at a steady 45-50 MPH and in OD, as I slowly accelerate up a hill is will occasionally skip like the tranny is thinking about shifting gears, but it doesn't... The skip is almost like the motor is missing just one cylinder for one spark.
I don't notice any RPM change, so I don't think it is tranny related... Any ideas?
It started the "slipping" around 28,000 miles. This was just prior to my tranny flush and it has not gone away after the flush. I checked fluid levels before and after the flush and all is well.
I can duplicate it about 75% of the time. There is one hill near home which gives me a higher "slip" potential than the other hills. The strange thing is this hill does not have as steep of a grade as the others.
Any chance it is the fuel filter causing this problem? The filter change is the only thing I have yet to accomplish for the 30.000 mile servicing. The slip only happens when I am in overdrive, between 45-50 MPH and while accelerating. If you push more throttle and get it to downshift, there is no slip.
I am going to take it to the Ford boys since it is still under warranty. They can change the filter and run any codes.

guys,
thanks for the replies. I just bought the truck a week ago so i dont know how old the fluids are. I plan on changing them pretty quick, ( as soon as i get some time off from school). I tried the same place where this has been happening with my overdrive off and didnt have the problem, i will keep trying it with and without overdrive to se if i can get some consistent results. thanks for the help.
i have been chasing my tail for 2 months with almost the same problem on my 2000 f250 v-10
at 50-60 in overdrive it feels like i have bad tank of gas, if i his the gas or knock it out of overdrive it goes away till the next hill.
there are no codes,or engine light, i have change the fuel filter but still experiencing the problem.
had into the shop and it ran fine that day......lol
they could not find anything, let me know if you have made any headway with this thing
thanks joe
I think what you are experiencing is called "hunting", the tranny can't decide between keeping the converter locked and staying in od or unclocking the conveerter and dropping out of od. Read your owners manuals, it talks about "hunting". And yes, you are supposed to lock it out of od if it "hunts".
Are you running taller than stock size tires? My 01 won't unlock the converter in od without downshifting to 3rd unless i'm going at least 75 mph. Sounds to me like computer reflash could change that.

Joey, if you want firmer shifts and to prolong the life of your tranny than I think a valve body vs programer is the way to go. The programer will just raise line pressure wich is tough on the pump. I just ordered the Factory Tech from Greg at
factory tech direct com. Talk to greg first. They sell for around $220. And if your due for a trany oil change than this would be a great time. I'll be installing mine on monday
I'll post my opinion the first of the week.
