Checking tranny fluid is more complicated than just pulling the dipstick. Each model tranny has a specific method required to get an accurate measure.
Read the manual for the specific. Usually there is a specific amount of drive time, no more no less, or idle time required. Specific outside air temperature range. And of course what sequence do you shift gears thru and do you fully seat the dipstick.
I think on the Ford, you must be between 50 and 90 degrees air temp. Drive less than 5 minutes for cold, or 30 for hot. Then shift thru gears starting with 1 and stop 3 seconds in each gear and wind up in park. Take measure within a couple minutes of shifting and seat the dipstick fully.
It can be tricky. I often will measure a couple days in a row to be sure. this is important especially after a fluid change to make sure you got rid of all the bubbles.
As far as 1/4 inch high, that isn't too bad and I probably wouldn't worry about it. If it really bothers you, pull one of the cooler lines and let it drain into a can. Then check level.
