4.0 trans interchangeable with a 2.9??

i have a Ford Ranger 1991 STX 2.9 4 Wheel drive Auto and i have a transmission out of a 1991 Ford Explorer4.0 4 wheel drive Auto will these two transmissions bolt up the same i have heard to many people say they will and to many say they wont so if there is some one out there who will know for sure please let me know.......
