My engine light has been coming on at high speeds on the road or when I put it under a load. Here is the kicker! The engine light will go off when you turn the air conditioner on. and pretty much stay off for a while. I have a 93 Ranger Super Cab 4x4 4.0l. I was thinking o2 sensor until the air conditioning thing happened now I am baffled. Any Thoughts. Thanks. Possible solution (ride with the AC on)!!
I had pretty much the same problem, except that it would stay on and the A/C wouldn't turn it off. I tried to pull the codes today and it didn't have any... hmm... anywho, I just hit clear codes and the light went off.
For your prob. however, maybe a misfiring spark plug? I think AutoZone (or equal) will pull your codes for free. That should tell you the exact problem.
Or check out your local high school auto shop... give them a daily project. They learn, your problem gets solved, everyone wins. haha

Hey guys. I pulled the codes during the engine off that where in my computer and all I got was system pass. So I did the engine running test and all I got was system passed. Earlier I could turn the A/C on and the light would go off, now that doesnt work. When I am getting up to speed is when it comes on. When I travel at high speeds it comes on and off every few minutes. I was thinking maybe an O2 sensor but if it was bad wouldnt the reader find it during the test? Any ideas would be appreciated.
I sorta had this problem on my 94 Ranger SCab 4x4 4.0L back when it was new. While on my way to the dealer service dept, the light came on, and crap, when I was within sight of the Ford sign it went out. They plugged into the computer with the truck still running, hoping to get a code. NADA, and the same with all of the rest of codes being pulled with engine off. No codes, period.
They suspected that an O2 sensor was near one end of its operating limits, but would not replace it. They suggested trying different brands of gas. I solved the problem by running a bottle of FI cleaner through it with every oil change. It took care of 99+% of the problem; the CEL will now, maybe, come on under heavy load, with a trailer, and going up a mtn pass on a freeway.
BTW, when they pulled the codes with the engine running, they were able to tell that I was going over 45MPH, that the A/C was on, and I think they could tell that I was in 5th; odd.
On edit: I got the CEL every morning while getting on the same freeway, exact same time and onramp, and it was followed by on-off-on-off etc CEL activity while @ cruise speeds.

I am not having any drivablity problems. I havent tried the battery but I will. We go up an on ramp and it seems to do it the same place every time. Also on that note I am accelerating to get up to speed. When I hooked the scanner up it told me that I wasnt in neutral and that the defrost was on. But after that I got system pass on both tests. I have ran FI cleaner through not less than a month ago but hasn't helped. I dont seem to have a loss of power or anything like that. Any ideas??
