Hey Madd,

Are you doing the work yourself and what parts are you going to replace? I may be in the same boat.

Timing Chain

My 2000 Explorer just began to sound like a diesel - and the head gasket had begun to leak - according to Ford, and another independent I consulted, the motor is toast and I have a choice of a new one or a rebuild - the dealer said the timing chain had broken and there were metal bit all over. We have had it since October 03 and it always sounded a bit rough - we had the tensioner done under the recall.

We have chosen the new motor as we got the truck for a decent price and the new motor has a two year or 40,000 km warranty. Is the new motor likely to be better than the original?

I take it this problem isn't covered by the warranty we were just talking about since they can't seem to fix this motor....or is it?

It will be as long as they put the new timing chains and tensioners in. I would do it with the motor is out. Its cheeper. I would look at putting in the rear seal to that way you dont have to look for leaks. Just my 2 cents.

Hey, Benelli Boy and Baileydog,

Benelli Boy: What I am doing is replacing the tensioners and timing chain guides and cassttes. All of them. I am also replacing the gears to the timing chain (just in case they are bad). I had to get gaskets for the rear, spacer, bolt and intake gasket, and a tensioner for the timing chain and since the motor is out, I am having the rear and main seals replaced. I am having a ford tech do it on the side,,,, ,.......I am just waiting for one of the gears to come in.

Baileydog:I don't know what motor you plan to replace it with. But, if your vechile is under the 100,000 miles or 7 years they should uphold the original warranty even if they replace it with a new one. I am not a true buff in knowing all about motors, that's my husband's job... But, since I am the one dealing with the dealers on the parts, I have learned fast. Just keep asking around and when not for sure, get a second opinion. I hope this helps anyone who is screwed with this problem. I will let all of you guys know when my motor gets fix.

I'm thinking about buying a 2002 with the 4.0 SOHC. Had all of the timing problems you are talking about been addressed by the 2002 models? I don't see any compliants from this model year. Thanks.

.....Hey,

To answer your question, they fixed the problem and left everyone with a 1997-2000 and mountineers 2001 screwed. I am having my 97 fixed as we speak, but, got bad news last night. He feels that I should have the heads and look into a block.
Well, I might as well rob a bank, because I had blown my wad into buying this piece of crap and all the recall parts to fix it. So, I plan to get the motor back, drop it in and grab my ankles. I suggest you go to the dealers and have the service tech to pull the vin info on it and check if their was any outstanding warnings(another word used for recall, only if the owner should complain)on it so you can learn now instead of later.......I hope this helps .....let me know

I AGREE W/ DOGMAN.... BE A TOTAL PAIN IN THEIR BUTT. IT'S YOUR MOTOR NOT THEIRS ... THEY JUST WANT TO WAIT SO YOUR WARRANTY WILL RUN OUT AND YOU WILL HAVE TO GRAB YOUR ANKLE.... NOT THEM ..... IF THEY STILL WON'T DO IT. CALL BBB OFFICE AND FILE IT ..... YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE THEM FIX NOW UNDER THE WARRANTY. ....

Cool

My 98 Mountineer is the LAST peace of Ford CRAP I'll ever be buying!! Every new generation of engineers and satisticians(bean counters) that the manufacturers get cause more customers to become disloyal to the brand! If these jerks would consentrate on consistant customer satisfaction they wouldn't have to be scrambling all over the globe for cheap labor and part suppliers. A satisfied customer is the utmost insurance for a thriving business!
I had Ford look at my noisy 4.0 sohc and they kept putting me off. They know damn well what the problem is but would rather save a penny now but lose me as a future customer. WELL,THEY CAN CONSIDER THEIR MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Exclamation

That is how I actually felt and wrote emails to them and dateline and anyone I thought of. I used all my money to buy this thing and it was messed up!!!!!
I am only grateful that I was able to fix it by myself and it is doing fine. I own a GMC EXT- TRUCK , FORD TEMPO, FORD BRONCO II, FORD ESCORT STATIONWAGON, HAS AND FORD RANGER, CHEVY CAMARO 82 AND AN 84, and I can only say I have been the type to buy cash and what I could afford.. I never had a loyal manuf. to stay with. I just wanted something that would last and I could afford. So, when my crap started. I was ready to sue someone for this design fawl. But, my husband wanted to fixed it and keep it and I had wanted to sell it cause I was mad at Ford for it.
But, it all worked out so far.......I plan to buy another vechile for my daughter soon and I need to sell two the car just sitting in the driveway. Soon, my same method applies. I hope this time I dont have to milk more money into it right after I buy it....
