Hello all,
Yet another newbie here. First off I would like to thank every body for all of the great information given here. Hopefully it will save me some dollars by not having to take my new toy into the shop. I was hoping I wouldn't have to ask for advice for a while but alas, I have a problem.
My question is this, when turning, mainly left, I noticed a pretty strong thump coming from what appears to be the right front wheel. I have noticed the manual locking hub doesn't turn smoothly from free to lock. Could this be the cause, or is it just another problem that needs to be addressed.
I have seen posts regarding ball joint causing similar sounds, and being new to the heavy duty pickup world, what is the easiest way to check these?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
I've been wondering the same thing. Mine makes this thump noise also. I have a 97 f250 psd that the previous owner had a snowplow on. I've had both ball joints replaced as well as the u-joints. I also replaced the factory leaf springs with Blacks 1-ton leaf springs. I did all these because of the snow plow but the truck still thumps. Someone told me that it could be loosened frame rivets in the front end. Any info would be great. Thanks guys for all the great insight and information!!!
check your lower shock bushings. if too soft they let the shock hit the mount. Have a buddy rock the truck side to side while you watch the shocks. It will be readily apparent. I replaced mine with polyurathane, clunk went away
Recently on my buddies 98 mazda b3000, his hubs would not engage correctly, i figured some mud got in there, no big deal right, not really. The wheel bearing went out, misalining the hub from the axle, and it would not engage, sounds like you have a bad wheel bearing. I know these power strokes have a fully sealed front wheel beaing assembly, probably run you about 175 dollars. On my buddies b300 it came with everything, the entire assembly, but i do not know about the SD's because i have not had to replace mine yet. Good luck.
If your hubs are locked in, you will get the thumping sound when taking sharp turns. This is normal.
Now on the sticky/hard to turn hubs, take them out and soak in ATF for an hour or so; every 15 minutes turn the hubs from free to lock and back a good number of times, then place back in truck. Be sure to work them every now and then, to keep them smooth turning.
