Fail Safe Feature?
Could someone please explain the failsafe feature on the triton engines. I understand when there is a coolant loss the computer will shut down some cylinders. But how far and long can the engine run in this mode? Will the engine suffer damage? I like the idea of this feature and if I were somewhere in the outback this could be a life saver.

It's a fairly nifty system but, you really only should use it if you absolutely need to. Here's how it works. First at 250° F the coolant temperature gauge will peg in the hot zone and the warning light will come on. At 258° F the PCM will disable 4 injectors at a time. The PCM will alternate which 4 injectors are disabled every 32 engine cycles. The cylinders that aren't firing are used as "air pumps" to help cool the engine. If the engine temperature still increases, the PCM will shut the engine down at 310° F until the engine temp drops below 310°.
So if you can stop, you really should. At 310° you are really close to causing engine damage if he already haven't. Aluminium can start doing some funking things when things start getting that hot.
