O2 Sensor Removal?

I own a 1996 AWD 5.0L Explorer. I'm in the process of trying to change out a o2 sensor . I have the different ratchet attachments to remove the sensors, but I just can't seem to get my hands in far enough to unplug the old sensors. The wires go up over the transmission and there is no way I can reach the plugs to disconnect them . Do I have to unbolt the pipes and drop them? How do the dealers do it?
Thanks, Dan

well danbov i can understand your frustration, i did mine about 6 months ago but i have small hands and small figure and was able to reach up and unplug the harnesses with a lil effort. another way to go about it is if you look up just above the transmission, where all the harnesses are, you will see something that looks like a lil door, thats your way in. Im not sure about your 96 but on my 98, just for kicks, i removed the center console to see if their was an actuall opening and after i removed the center console, there were 4 bolts where the access panel was and whaalaaa, access to the harneses. just look up to see if that lil access door is there just above the trans.......good luck and hope this works for you.

p.s. you might, after removing the console, have to cut a small piece of carpet in order to gain access to the panel.

I just changed Bank 1 Sensor 1 in '97 5.0. It helped having skinny arms and I removed the plate that seemed to be protecting wiring going into the tranny. It was still VERY tight! Didn't know about the opening in the console, I'll look for it if I have to do it again.
