I have a 94 explorer with about 100,000 miles on it. It doesnt have much power and it pings really bad going up hills. I was wondering if the o2 sensors are going bad, they have never been changed. How do I know if they are bad? How long should they last? Does anybody have any other suggestions?? thanks Dan
The O2 sensor is kinda like a little battery. Ground is the case and the single lead is the + terminal. It "turns on" at about 600 degrees F and will produce from between 0 to about 1VDC depending on the oxygen content of the exhaust. .7 volts is right on. lower is rich, higher is lean. it is not linear. Slope is very high at .7 and trends off on either side. A DVM will tell you if they are working. They can be "cleaned" with a propane torch... the idea is to burn of the carbon build-up and not melt the sensor. But at 35$ each, I just buy new ones.
This is assuming you have one wire O2, there are heated versions that operate at low EGT. GL
MAF sensor gets covered with trash over time and the result is a lean running engine. Too lean means no power . Remove two torx screws end clean wires of MAF with spray brake cleaner. If O2,s were goin bad check engine lite should come on.
