[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jun-02 AT 07:23 PM (EST)]I'm sorry for posting this here, but I don't know where else to put it or who else to ask. My dad recently bought a Ford model 640 tractor. Not sure what year, but I think it was built in the 50's. It has a 4 speed trans. with a Sherman over/under. He mowed with the bushhog once and it ran great. Then, mysteriously, it started pumping all the hydraulic fluid for the 3 point hitch and external hydraulics into the transmission until the trans. started puking around the shifter boot. Let it sit and cool off, and the trans. level will equalize with the hydraulic reservior again. I'm a little suspicious that he may have grabbed the control lever for the external hydraulics instead of the 3 point lever and with no external device attached, blew out a seal somewhere. Anybody got any idea what happened and how to fix it? Tractors are NOT my thing, but sadly, I'm the family mechanic. I'm petrified that I'll have to split it in half to get at the problem. We've got the service and shop manuals, but I haven't got a clue what I need to fix!
if you operate the remote hydraulics with nothing on them it won't hurt a thing. I have worked on several tractors before but I don't remember how your hydraulic system is. I worked on a ford 601 for a woman last winter and can vaugly remember the hydraulic system.
I can tell you however where to start looking. first take off the seat and the big plate that the seat sits on. this should remove the 3-point lifter arm and all. this plate is most of the routing for the fluid. once you remove it you should quickly be able to see any damage or busted seals. Don't quote me on this but if I remember right the lines from the hydr. pump run up the right side and are at the front of the hydro resevoir.
and if you wish to check the pump out I believe that it is externally mounted and directly above the starter.
if you can give a few more specs on the tractor. may be able to elaborate farther.
Go to www.ytmag.com, they have about the best on farm tractors I have ever seen. They go all the way back and they also have a question and answer forum. My experience is on Ferguson TO-30s so I can't help you much.
I got a better look at this thing today and you are really close. The pump is mounted on the right side of the engine and it has an aluminum manifold that drops down to the front of the trans. I assume that the lines/hoses then run through the trans. back to the hydra. res. Starting to wonder if maybe it popped one of these lines inside the trans. I think the trans. and hydra. oil is supposed to be isolated and this is the only explanation I can think of. I'll go check out those tractor sites and see if I can figure anything out. If not, I guess I'll have to take that cover under the seat off and see what I've got. Thanks for the pointers!
Those seals (O rings)as noted in a previous post that go up to the hydraulic valve along the side can bust. I changed some last year. That top plate you have to take off was a PITA and it takes a few people to put it on. I think it is the only way to see what is wrong. Hope this helps.
I'm not familiar with that tractor but most tractors don't have a separate hydraulic resevor, they use the oil in the transmission . Your problem sounds like the oil is over heating, it may not have a cooler or the cooler is plugged. It is usualy in front of the engine radiator. Hope this helps, as the other gentleman said www.ytmag.com is a good site, then go to disscusion board/Ford. Drill
