I have a 1995 Ford Ranger with I believe has a factory alarm system. The truck does not have a remote door unlock. I use a key to unlock the doors. Every time I unlock the door and open it, the horn goes off and the theft light on the instrument panel lights up. As soon as I put the key in the ignition and turn it two positions, not starting it, the horn stops. The truck does start normally. This just started yesterday. Does anyone have any ideas on what is causing this? Is there a way to reset the system?
My 98 does this anytime you lock the doors by hitting the button inside or using the remote and then unlock them with the key. Mine does not have the key with the chip in it or whatever so no matter what it honks when locked electronically. I hate when my dad wants to drive it and he gets mad when it starts honking when he unlocks the doors. I always use the remote though, so it does not really matter much to me.
Just a thought.....Could you have a fuse blown that is normally hooked through one of the GEM systems? I fought a door alarm system for some time and found that some prior owner installed an after market radio and left the anti-theft wire apparently disconnected. Since your problem just started, I would think a fuse or relay might be the problem. Also, I wonder if you could accomplish a reset by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery for a couple of minutes. Good Luck!
I did install a new cd receiver about two weeks back. But the problem just started. Also, I disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes, same problem. The truck also has a ATS (Anti-Thef System) installed. It is basically a kill switch. I have a chip that plugs in under the steering cloumn. It does work. I tried removing the chip and then going through the steps of locking the truck and unlocking with the key, horn still sounds and thef light on the instrument panel lights.
Have you tried squirting a little WD-40 in the offending door lock? That has cured a lot of alarm system problems. Also, just for kicks, try leaving the CD system turned on when you turn off the ignition. Your '95 has a lot more bells and whistles than mine, but I think the GEM system is involved here somehow.
Also, since I don't have an anti-theft system, I am not very knowledgeable how they work. I believe I was once told that there is a switch involved with the hood that causes problems. You might give it a look see. You might search the threads for additional information.
Thanks for the suggestions. I was having trouble with the door switch. About a week ago i did squirt some lubricant in the latch area. It cured the switch problem. I will try squirting some more in both doors. I also tried leaving the radio on, no good. I am going to pull the fuse on the cd receiver and see if it solves the problem.
Did you check for the switch that is activated by the hood? Also, scroll to the botttom of this page and find the little square that says, "Search This Forum". Type in Anti-Theft System and then hit "Go". Read some of those threads. Lots of useful information.
I was out doing some searching for the problem. I am not the original owner. I just purchased about a month ago. I noticed yesterday that when I locked the doors using the passenger side switch, the alarm did not activate, only when I used the drivers side switch. So today I pulled the passenger side door panel off. There is three connectors that were not plugged in. I found homes for two of them. They were not for the window or locks obviously since both always worked fine. It looks like they are both used for some type of switches. The third plug is white and round, I could not find a home for it. I am going to do some research in the cd manual that I have. I am looing for a good Ford Electronic Troubleshooting manual. That would help. Anyway, now when I lock the doors using either door switch, the horn and lights do go off when I unlock the door. Odd. I am going to figure this out. Also, the bulb is missing from the under hood socket. I am going to go get a bulb. This is not over.
