I have a 79 f250, it was sitting for about 3 1/2 years. when It was delivered to me, I found 5 bent push rods. I've replaced the rods, put a kit in the carb, changed oil, hoses etc. It is hard to start when cold, purrs like a kitten when warm, ther is a hesitation when the throttle is depressed while in park. when put in gear the engine vibrates and stummers, hard to get going from a dead stop with hesitations and such, once going, hold on. any suggestions!!
Besides the bent push rods, if it didn't just bend the new ones again, sounds like accelerator pump is not doing anything... maybe vacuum advance diaphram being gone is not helping...
It may have been rebuilt and someone did not measure the valve train clearances. Gat a machinist to look over the heads b4 you bend more.
You can find more engine info in the engine forums, I would guess it has a 351M or a 400, possibly a 460 but if it has been messed with and rebuilt it could be anything.
Engine Identification:
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 10.7" wide
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
There are other indicators but these may help.
There is also more carb help available in the fuel systems forum.
