To those that enjoy Nascar, I just finished a great book - DAYTONA - by Ed Hinton. Good reading for those that love and UNDERSTAND auto racing.

Hahaha.......what lively conversations we generate here. It could be that the book would help folks understand Nascar Dono. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be on the lookout for it.

I find it amusing how everyone that does not like Nascar is accused of not "UNDERSTANDING" it.

For those of us that do not like/care for it... we "UNDERSTAND" it, we just don't like it.

No flame war trying to get started here...

Oh yeah, one last thing. Do all of you Nascar fans that "UNDERSTAND" it, drive with a number on your car/truck?

THAT, I do not understand. WHOOOO HOOOO <insert banjo music here>

Its called supporting your favorite driver just like folks that wear hockey, football, basketball, etc jerseys they are supporting their favorite player. Yes i have a 3 and an 8 on my truck my choice i have followed Nascar for 30 some years and i have never accused anyone that does not like nascar of not understanding it in fact i've never heard anyone else say that either.

Hey dono have you read Driver 8 i just started it a couple days ago and so far pretty good.

Rob - I just read a good book and thought I'd pass it on to those that might be interested. I read the post over to find where I accused anybody of anything - couldn't find it.

Rob - checked my truck ('99 Ranger) and car (60 Triumph TR3), found no numbers, not even in the license plates. I'm glad I amused you - keep smiling.

I understand it enough to walk out of a Nascar race 15 minutes after getting there walking an hour through the parking lot. Round, and round and round... every car to the same specs, left turn, left turn, left turn, left turn. Nascar just doesn't float my boat..... its boring to me to watch cars go around in a circle in cars with restricter plates and tons of limits on them. There are plenty of types of races with more action, requiring more driving skill, and ingenious methods of horsepower that don't get anywhere near the attention they deserve.

The Nascar folks, IMHO, have excelled chiefly in one area: marketing.

I can't be accused of not understanding, I just find it dull.

I admit it: I like the hype. The in car camera has done as much for NASCAR as has their marketing. Yes, the cars are fully capable of doing over 200 mph if unchained. Instead we watch them go round and round at less than that speed.

I can live with that.

I can watch other types of racing but NASCAR is what got me started. Besides, it's cool to watch a chess game at nearly 200 mph. And not everybody likes chess.

Where else can you go for such an emotional start of a race (National Athem, flyby, and the President of the US of A saying "Gentlemen, Start your Engines", with nearly 250,000 people present?

I love it, I love it, I love it!

Yea, nascar used to be fun when cars looked a bit like real cars(you could tell them a part).Where do they get off calling them stock cars? Hav'nt seen any V-8,2 door,4speed, carbed cars like any of those STOCK cars. And the golden boys as in Earnhart are are punks.Wear the hat backwards, talk the jive lingo and generally think they owe you because your daddy blocked and cheated got killed and became some sort of god.Let a Ford or Dodge win a few and watch the rule changes.Let a G.M. punk cheat and everything is A O.K.Got to give the masses(tickets, programs, parking, shirts, hats, beer,l ots of beer)what they pay for. Naw,give me Drag Racing instead.

I still like motocross. I do watch NASCAR. I just don't have much use for pro sports of any kind. Football, baseball, & basketball with their over paid uneducated monkeys is just a waste of time.

Winston cup racing is one of the few series that is open to nearly everyone, and accessable in many parts of the country.

It bugs me that they have so many restrictions - but sprint car racing does too.

There's something about a clay track that makes an oval come to life tho...

Blacktop tracks turn it all into a "Choo-choo Train" race, in my opinion.

The hairiest racing I think I've seen is the wide open style of Can Am and the Grand Prix circuit. Mucho ponies on tap, 250+ mph, city streets on some tracks, and the lightest cars it is possible to build.

-But you won't find one at the local dealerships. And if you do find a car like that - you could probably buy two or three houses for what it costs...

(And yeah, I love that scene from "Driven" where Stallone and wutzizz name are racing F-1's through town)

What a idiotic statement! for one thing Earnhardt is'nt looked upon as a god and did'nt die as a result of cheating yes he was trying to hold of the field and in my opinion the only thing he was gulity of is being unselfish because his son and someone he thought of as a son (M Waltrip) were 1 and 2 and he wanted to see one then expierence winning at daytona as he did.

As far as cheating Richard Petty was one of the best at cheating he even admitted it at one time and he drove a dodge. That was back when the driver did alot of the wrenching on the cars as well as drive them these days the driver dose'nt even touch the car the team is responsible for that and are the ones that are caught cheating so when you say let a G.M.punk cheat and every thing is a ok I DO'NT THINK SO as a matter of fact last time i checked M Martin drove a ford his team was fined just two weeks ago.

What TV dose'nt talk about is how many teams are caught and fined and there are just as many fords and dodge teams caught as well as pontiac and chevy.

I do agree with Ken as far as Nascar and marketing i think they get carried away at times but racing as in all other sports money is the bottom line.

Nascar

this as with many things in life i think we must agree to disagree
i for 1 am a HUGE nascar fan and yes i do have a 88 on my taurus and i have a small 3 with the angle wings on it because even though i think big E was a no good cheating s.o.b. he new how to race when it mattered and he also knew how to cheat when it mattered (as most racers do) but i think big E was a leader in racing and will be missed by me and millions of others

alot of racers (mainly the new "young guns") are caught cheating and fined but it is not publisized because it dont matter to the races outcome where as all those time that the crybaby (janice er i mean jeff gordan) was caught cheating after winning a race it was made public do to the fact he won or placed in the top 10

I have went to many drag races and i love watching those boys hit 200 + mph in a 1/4 mile but to me it does not compair to watching all those cars goin around and around @200 mph basicly hold their and many others lives in their hands

well id say thats just my $.02 but that seams more like &.47

I was really glad to see NASCAR come north to race at Watkins Glen in the late 80's. A real road course (left & right turns) and the boys were ready to race it. I was selected to work emergency services and as such "sat in on" the radio from the tower. When the boys got too far apart, the tower would call for a yellow flag for debris on the track or oil. These calls are usually made trackside to the tower who would then issue the yellow. Not so for NASCAR. They could spot oil from the tower that the people trackside couldn't even see. Bunched them all up again and off to the races again. After it happened again the next year, I was firmly convinced that NASCAR is for entertainment only. Even the drivers aren't aware of the trackside conversations. I don't care for NASCAR racing, but I would have to guess that most of their races have a yellow flag within the last 10 laps.
They should just let 'em run their laps and see who wins.
Just an observation...

What form of racing or sports is not for "entertainment only"?
