I have two trucks, this is confusing so I will spell it out. I have an 87 F150 5.0 EFI 2X4 with an automatic. And I have an 89 F150 4.9 I6 EFI 4X4 with a five speed manual. I am swaping engines, and that is all. I have the 5.0 in the 1989 truck and everything is working great. The trans bolts on with ease, and the motor mounts were swapped. But the problem is in the electrical. I have been told I have to switch the computers. which means i would have a 5.0 EFI auto computer in a 5.0 EFI manual truck, I can see that the computer will be trying to run something that isn't there, which is fine, however the wiring harnesses will not bolt together. The seems to be three main harness sections to the 89, the engine, front engine compartment, and the rear. the engine harness needs to be swapped, but they will not intertwine. I need to find a 5.0 engine harness that will connect to the 89 rear and engine compartment harnesses, what do I do? Thankyou very much to anybody who can help.
When you swapped the engine, the computer, and the harness and it would have worked no problem.
I've swapped automatic ECM's into vehicles with manual trannys, and its worked fine (GM and Ford at least). The other way around rarely works out as nice (still drivable) due to minor timing related differences between the manual/auto ecms.
you can also use a mustang 5.0L harness, and repin about 10 wires on the ECM connector, you just need the two wiring diagrams side by side.
thanks for the help. Amungst it all, I got the wrong bearings, and the motor won't turn, more work, more money, but I got a truck with the same engine, and the correct harness and computer, so it should all work out
thanx
Hiflyer746, did you have any problems with the clutch not engaging, maybe the slave clinder is not compatable, or something? I am doing a similar swap, and I ran into this problem...
Mgundry, tell me more about your swap, the clutch actually worked perfectly for me, I had to use the clutch alignment tool to get it in straight, and it worked great. I replaced the throwout bearing. make sure that the cylider is full # 1, make sure the trans will fit the engine #2, then make sure you got hte right clutch. see if that works, look forward to hearing from you and about your project
Hiflyer746, thanks for the reply.
I (me and my father) am swapping my 300 I-6 out with a 1994 302 from a van. I have a 1992 F-150 5-speed 4x4. So far progress has been painfully slow.... We put what we thought was the correct flywheel, clutch and pressure plate in, but when we would turn the truck on, it would jump forward, so for some reason the clutch would not disengage, at-all. Tell me about that clutch alignment tool you used. What exactly is the throwout bearing? The engine and the trans are definately compatable, or so i have been told. and now we are not sure we have the right clutch, how exactly would we know? Also, how did you end up correcting the wiring harness situation? soo many questions, I would grealty appreciate your help, thanks Mark
i have a fuel injected harness for an 89 bronco w/ a 5.0 and the 5 speed. if yopu want it, i have all kidna of 5.0 parts if you want them too, actually a whole truck 5.0, m50d and teh harness. but if you just want the harness, 20 bucks you can have it.
bigwhtbco, Thanks for your reply. I would be very interested in finding out what all parts you have that I need. We need to get in contact with direct e-mail or by phone. Do you think I will need to completely redo the wire harness?
you will probly eaither have to make your own harness, or change the computer and harness into the truck the 5.0 is going into. my aim screenname is tommguitar if you wanna get in touch, i'm online all the time.
Mgrundy,
I am nearing the end of my project. In the final annalisys, I have had three trucks, and they are all combining into one, after breaking a few parts. I agree with one of hte other posts, check to make sure your clutch is in properly. the alignment tool is simple. when you put the pressure plate on and tighten it down, you can no longer move the clutch plate untill the trans is bolted and the clutch peddal is depressed, so the alignment tool simply is a shaft that goes through the clutch hole into the pilot hole, and with that in place, you tighten down the pressure plate. the tool is about 10 dollars from napa. The throw out bearing is the bearing on the end of the clutch cylinder that rides on the pressure plate. if the old one does not turn well, or is not smooth, it should be replaced.
The truck is an 89, I left all the wiring harnesses in except the ignition harness, the harness that actually bolts to the injectors and sensors on the engine. I took the ignition harness out of an 89 150 with the 5.0. It was by luck that I found this harness. the 87 style harness would not bolt to the 89. your ignition harness might work from the van, they are newer and might have the same chassis harnesses.
so all i have left is to bolt on the intake and exhaust manifolds, set the timing, and start her up! any more questions let me know.
Hiflyer746, Thanks for the help. We ended up using the 302 flywheel with the 300 clutch disc and pressure plate. Not sure why the other clutch disc and pressure plate did not work, ohwell, we don't need it now. Next up is the wiring, which I hope is not a prob, thanks
Hiflyer746, If you do not mind, will you go over how you did your engine harness? We have the engine all in, but when we fire it up, it does not run for long. It seems as thought the injectors are not getting any fuel. Any help would be appreciated, thanks Mark
