Can anyone decipher these? Axle tag: S838B 355 88 3D13 (I know 355 means 3:55 gear ratio, but what's the rest?) Also, the differential housing is cast stamped with 3088 on the front top right side... does this mean anything?
3S is Sterling plant
838B is the model and rev.
3 55 is the ratio
8 8 is 8.8" ring gear diameter
3D13 is the manufacture date April 13th, 1993:
3 for 1993
D for April
13 th day
I'm not sure what the casting number 3088 is or means.
Any idea what I need to do to convert this rear-end to Traction-loc? Do I have to go back with the same gear ratio? and can I change the spindles from 31 to 28 spline if I leave the size and gear ratio the same?
Why would you want to go with a 28 spline unit? Did you get a Traction Lok unit from a Mustang or something? Keeping your existing 3.55 would be easier since you won't have to mess with the pinion and all the settings associated with it. (Bearing pre-load, taking off the driveshaft, flange and all that) I put an Auburn LS unit in my 1994, they are much stronger than the Trac Loks and they are available for your 8.8" 31 spline. They cost around $500. If you don't want to spend that much, then you can get a used traction lok but it would be easier if you found a carrier with the 31 splines so your axles will fit. 28-spline axles from another vehicle may not be the correct length and bolt pattern (5 on 5.5" for your truck). Also if you get a used one, make sure it came from another F150 that is somewhat close to your year. The Vehicle Speed Sensor mounted on top of your rear diff is what drives the speedometer and the Rear ABS. You need a carrier that has the correct flange thickness so you can still mount the tone ring between the ring and the flange. Without the tone ring, the VSS doesn't work.
I had thought about using a high performance carrier and unit from a cobra or svo mustang... that's the only reason I asked about swapping splines. Thanks for the info. How do I know, without tearing into my rear-end, what the flange size is to make my VSS work?
How difficult would it be to change the ratio to a 3.76:1 if I find a carrier and r&p for an 8.8 31 spline?

If the carrier was designed to be used with your year truck, it'll have the right size (thickness) flange. Either the carrier is designed for a tone ring or it isn't. You don't have to worry about the carrier break mesurement, there isn't one on a Ford 8.8, just whether it uses a tone ring or not. Get an Auburn if you can, they're pretty awsome.
