Angry 6.9 woes

Recently bought a 1986 F-350 dually crew. Sold "as-is" under the assumption that it was ready for work. Work so far: Water pump $20, Heater core, Injectors, Starter.
Ran much better (I thought) until I noticed smoke out the tail pipe. Poped the hood and found #8 blowing compression all over the fire wall. (Guess that's why I found #8 injector loose, old ones 70 to 110 bar) Seller now refuses to renegotiate price or offer a back out. Guess I'm stuck with a $3500 peice of $#!^. Any suggestions?

"as is" = as is. Tell us a little more about the thing and we can help you get it going. You put on a water pump for $20 (used i suppose), the heater core was probably leaking inside and needed a change (every body gets a shot at those) , the starter was probably worn out due to over cranking (usually caused by hard start situation) and the injectors (did you change them all or just the ones needed to be replaced? Number blowing compression all over the firewall ? ? ? I am assuming you found fuel spraying back to the firewall which is probably due to a loose fuel line to number 8 or a fuel leak at the fuel return line. Get back to us and we can get you going, but diesels arent cheap to get back into shape the right way.

Well the water pump was reman from (egads) Auto Zone highest pressure off the injectors was 110bar and the lowest was 70 bar replaced, all the injectors. Now I find that at least #8 has hopfully just a blown head gasket. Found water in the oil and have compression bleeding into the coolant system. When I agreed to the as is it was under the impression that it was ready to go not ready to work on. plus the ip turns easily by hand. Figure I will have to replace it as well. Will have the heads off of it tomorrow. Most of this stuff I am finding out now after I put all the new injectors in and got it tight. I had better performance out of the old injectors than the new ones. Looks like I'm into this one for the long haul. Thought about putting a used 6.9 or 7.3 in it and be done with it but I guess I will know more when I roll the heads. Will keep you posted.

I know that feeling; I've been there too. Not blown a head gasket, but a LOT of fixes and $$$ on mine due to bad maintenance. These engines seem to need care almost every day...

One tip:
I read that a bad CDR valve (or heavy piston blow by..) might make head gaskets blow. Cause: too much oil is going into the intake through the CDR valve and when it explodes in the cylinders it creates overpressure, lifting the head enough to blow the gasket. And it happens often on #8 because of the construction of the intake and placement of the CDR valve outlet.

So check the CDR valve too, if the membrane is OK then clean it out good (I flush with gasoline) and make sure the pinhole in front is open.
(CDR valve is the "tuna can" attached betw. the valley pan and intake manifold.)

Compression in the coolant could also be the oil cooler gone bad. That too would give an oil and water mix.IP isnt hard to turn.

You should be able to fix that with just a gasket change.

I hope that is all it is but if not I found a complete used 6.9 for $500 or update to the 7.3 for $1000. Thinking hard on the 7.3.

That's pretty cheap for those engines, not a bad plan B.

Those prices are so low you may be buying more of what you have. The reman I just got had a 1000 core on the 6.9 and 1200 on the 7.3.

Unhappy Head is back!

Just got the head back today and it looks like it is salvagable for at least one more run at it. only have 5 thousanths left on the head. I think before I go with another 6.9 I will convert to the Cummins HO Turbo and 6 spd. Should have it back together this weekend after the rain stops pouring down. Still have to locate a compression tester to check the other side to see if I need to pull the other head off and do that gasket. The cylinders look pretty good, not muck of a ridge in them. Hope I get all the power I am supose to when I get it back together.

As for the cheap 6.9 he is trying to get rid of them because most people are going with the 7.3. the engine came out of a running truck. have heard the engine run and it sounds like what I hope mine will when it's done.
