Help!.. Get a wierd noise-- sorta like a rear-end noise.. Could it be u-joint? Changed the differential fluid.. not really much better. Just started driving this about 3 months ago, before that it was a 1992 F150..300 straight 6 cyl. -Great truck..
Any help would be appreciated!
Bad U-joints normally cause a vibration. Can you give us a little more information on your noise? Like does it change with speed,
accelerating, decelerating????
Yeah, it's worst when braking or slowing.. a hum or maybe grind noise. Sorta like a rear-end, but- hardly noticeable on acceleration... audile while coasting, louder at 20-40 mph than 50-65 mph.. it's crazy. It's a 99, differential changed twice in past 14 months.. never had a u-joint service, about 135,000 miles on the truck. Could the rear-end need some major work? Someone at Ford said it "sounded" like it was in the rear-end, but I'm starting to have my doubts.
I think I will, but still... this is not high pitched at all.. it's a low to medium sounding rub or scraping.
And thanks for the welcome Bob, this is a great site for the best trucks.
I've heard that sound in a 8.8 rear axle that was slowly eating it's gears up , somehow the surface hardening was gone on the crown gear and that was the noise being produced.
Do you have a Limited- Slip rear axle and if so, did you put the additive in with your refill? Is there any up / down motion with the axles? What did the fluid look like when you did change it? Sparkle's or metal particles. Let us know and good luck!
Okay, so actually I think this is what happened- several months ago I think the additive for LS was forgotten.. so I re-did all nice and good, apparently after talking to my new neighbor (I bought a new house!) he is an ex-Ford, ex-RangeRover, current Jaguar mechanic.. He had a look-see and says most of the noise is in the bearings, and some from rear-disc brakes, which is understandable.. So if he can't do it, off to Ford I go...
