Last night I decided to fire up my '62 for something to do. After several wanna starts, it finally got running, and idling pretty smooth. Then a wierd sound like a blower motor started coming from the engine. I checked the cab to make sure the heater motor wasn't running, or the neighbor was doing something as it was pretty noticible. It was somewhere in the engine, whatever it was. Then came the tinks, then tinkling, then it just stopped. The starter wouldn't turn over the engine, but I can turn it by hand, and it's not as hard to turn as it was previously. Fluids were checked and up to snuff prior to starting the engine (292). I havn't tried to start it, as it seemed to be fatal. Any thoughts? I believe an engine swap is now immenent.
I agree, it sounds like the starter.I had that happen to me once.It didn't bind up,but the starter stayed engaged, making all sorts of weird noises. The starter was trying to keep up with the flywheel.I just shut it off though. If it was an old starter, it might have done done something to it by repeatedly trying to start it.Mine did chip a flywheel tooth in the process. You might want to check it if it stopped the motor like you mentioned.Good luck.
I gave your advice a shot, and replaced the starter with my original one, but still won't do anything, other than click the solenoid. I jumped the battery, but again no more than that. Since I don't remember why I swapped out the starters, it could be both are toast I suppose. At least the flywheel teeth are still intact. Your suggestions make sense to me. The starter in the truck didn't turn over when I checked it with the battery, but I'd already installed my old one in before putting the juice to it. Guess I'll yank it out tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks guys!
Hey guess what??? It was the starter like you guys suggested!!! I took both starters in for a rebuild, and as it turned out, only one was rebuildable. So I just got it back today (a day later), and it worked as advertised. Thanks for your help, I'm happy again
