I have a 94 explorer with manual transimmssion. It has 130,000 miles. I get a lot of vibration on the shifter. Seems to change gears okay but the vibration doesn't sound good. Happens in all gears, used to be only third. Any ideas?
Could be a number of problems, Jake. Does it vibrate worse in one gear or is consistent in all gears. Does it vibrate in neutral? It could be a bent main shaft or bad input shaft bearing.
If the vibration is the same in all gears regardless of speed or RPM, then it could be a bent input shaft or the input shaft is out of alignment. Check pilot bushing in flywheel.
If it gets worse with speed then it's either the driveshaft or the output shaft. I would rule out the driveshaft though if the truck itself is pretty smooth.
If it varies with RPM, in and out of gear, then the input shaft is bent or there is an out of balance condition in the engine. Harmonic balancer wobbling? You can see that, but it's tough to get a good look at it.
It could be as simple as the pilot bushing being worn. This would cause the input shaft to wobble and you would get a vibration through out all gears.
Also, check to see if the tailshaft of the transmission is cracked.
