My truck (below) automatically turns off the blinker after the steering wheel passes a certain point on the column. Lately, the left blinker has not been turning itself off, and I drive with my radio on usually, which drowns out the barely audible clicking of the blinker. I don't usually look at my dash to see if my blinkers are still on, but I dont like looking like an idiot driving with my blinker on! Not that I ain't one anyways, but what needs to be replaced? Thanks.
On yer turn signal switch it has a rachet mechanism that when you turn the wheel back straight its supposed to click the lever back. The little plastic thing inside is broke. TIme for a new turn signal switch. Ive replaced em many times. All you need is a steering wheel puller and just basic tools. Gotta remove the steering wheel, the dashboard panel along with the ***** (wipers and headlights) and the column collar. Also the little panel under the column, along with the turn signal lever. Just unplug the wiring harness, unscrew the switch and cut the wires so you can slide the switch out cuz the plug wont fit through the small hole with the wires. When you go in with the new switch, somebody makes a special tool that is supposed to disconnect the wires at the plug, but I just cut the wires an inch or so above the plug and then slide the wires down the column then splice it back in with the plug. Oh yeah, that wiper **** is tricky to take off, take a 16 penny nail and a hammer and bend the tip at a 90* angle to pry on the little tab under the wiper **** to take it loose from the switch. Hey, im over in hawaii at K bay, we oughta get together some local ford owners and have a cruise around the Kam highway, that'd be cool.
Hey thanks for the info redneck. Think thats a great idea, you can e-mail me at jellisproductions@hotmail.com. I dont know of anyone else who has a old ford, but I will look around.
right on. Ya know, Ive seen quite a bit old Fords around here but most are rotted out from the damn salt. Mine was shipped here from home so no rust holes here. Hey do ya know any good paint shops on this rock that wont charge me a arm and a leg? I was over at the Big island a week ago for deployment and there was a whole mess of old Fords up there. Nice ones too.
my truck is still ugly, i have found many of the parts i need to fix her, but the total cost will end up around $6,000, mostly due to shipping costs. I don't know of any "cheap" places to get your truck painted, but I will pay good money to get mine painted at MAACO. Wish I could tell you where it was, but I haven't even started looking at piainting costs. Too much bodywork and the whole interior needs to be cleaned up and painted, the doors need to both be replaced, and my cab is rusting away at the corners. It would be very nice to be driving down the freeway and see a whole procession of old Fords goin by!
on the 86 model the plug on the end has a red insert that comes out then all you have to do is bend back the plastic tabs and pull each wire out of the plug without having to cut any wires, i'm not sure if its the same as an 83 but it should be. it is a little time consuming but an easy fix.
