stubborn cold start

My '86 F-250 - 351W - is stubborn to start when cold. Even with the Manual Choke (installed by a prior owner?) it takes a few attempts and I have to give it a little gas to keep the rpm's up for about 30 seconds or it will stall.

any ideas?

The choke might not be closing all the way. Does the fast idle work? That would explain why you have to keep your foot on the gas to keep it from quiting.

Yeah, thers a fast idle cam attached to the butterfly rod on the other side where the throttle linkage is attached. Take a look at tha to see if it aint froze up.
