After all our discussions in the past about the Fireblown Steeltex tire, it was announced that Fireblown is recalling them today. The affected vehicle seems to be the Ford Explorer. Can the SD be far behind?
I have 4 of those exact tires still mounted on the factory rims that came off of my 2000 superduty had about 15,000 miles on them, but they are only replacing the ones on the Excursion? Or did i read it wrong?
They can not recall based on vehicle. If you truck has the D rating they have to replace them.. My 350 has E, when I called Ford and Good year they said I'm out luck. I called Good year, becuase when I had an explorer with recalled tires, my local good year did the recall and gave me wranglers.
Took mine to the dealership yesterday. Dealership agreed that this should be covered. Problem is, they said that you have to take to Firestone to get new tires that they aren't the ones to replace them that this is Firestone's program. I then took it to the Firestone store and was told that they will only replace them on Excursions. They were very nice, but this still ****ed me off. I turned around and called the 800 number from the Firestone web page. From the lady I spoke to there, I was told "If you have not previously had a problem with the tires, we are not concerned or interested in replacing them." I had no idea that you had to run around on a set of tires until they all cast their tread off and attempt to kill you. Seems that no one involved gives a flip about actually doing something to prevent an accident. I will never, ever support Firestone/Bridgestone again. Oh, and he Firestone dealership did offer to put a new set of tires on it so that I wouldn't have to ride on these recalls... to the tune of $190.00 per tire.
My 2001 F250 has E rated 265's... If i had D rated for any reason i would be on fords butt. It should not matter what vehicles its on if they are showing a problem.
OK, here is the deal... It is a legality issue with recommended tire pressures.
I have the Steeltex R4S 265/75R16s, load range E, on my 2001 F-250. I called the local Firestone guys for the "scoop".
Many of the Excursions came with the Steeltex R4S 265/75R16 load range D tires. The Excursion's recommended tire pressure (listed on the door sticker) is lower than it should have been for this tire. If you operated your tires at this lower pressure it may have damaged the tire internally which could result in a tire failure at some time in the future.
To fix this problem Firestone is replacing the tires to keep from having another tire pressure/tire failure fiasco like they had with the Explorers.
So, if you have an Excursion and operated the tires at the incorrect tire pressure listed on your door sticker, go get a new set of tires.
However, your Super Duty has the correct tire pressure listed on the door sticker. If you didn't follow the recommended tire pressure on your Super Duty's sticker, any failures you experience are on your back and not Firestones.
Okay I understand all that was said. Wonder what the deal would be for me. I have both an excursion and f250. The ex came with worn tires so I swapped my f250 tires and ran at the ex stated pressures. I had the f250 tires extra after the lift and larger tire purchase.
Well gee whiz... the local Firestone dealer was the only one that got the story straight. Would have been fine if the Firestone 800 number didn't tell me what they did. Seems that mixed answers are the M.O. at Firestone.
