When I ordered my truck last week I had the option of the 4.10’s or 3.73’s but I did get a 6 speed manual. Maybe the auto is only available with the 3.73’s. So I may only be half wrong. What ever happened to your deal? Did you get your check back?
Ah...yea, your right....I'm getting the auto. Yes Sir...every dime. Really weird experiance. I am actually glad it happened now. I got the chance to change a few things on the next one.
Originally posted by Chaps The FX4 option is a waste of money IMO. If you need the skid plates buy them separate (doesn't sound like you do) otherwise you are paying $240 for lousy shocks and a decal. If you like the blackout look but want some chrome just get a black XLT and add the black sport grille later, just saved you another $800 (unless you have to have the special sport two tone cloth seats then buy the sport). With the 5.4 be sure to get the 4.30 axle.
what is the difference between the 4.30 and the 3.73? And we are talking the LSR, right?
it's the amount of turns the tires make in relatinoship to the drive shaft. 4.10's will make the truck seem like it has more power but 3.73's wil give you better milage. Sounds to me like you want the 3.73's.
The Limited Slip rear axle allows both rear tires to give you traction at once. Pay the money for the option it's worth it!!!!
Not to start a flaming war, but, you should really consider the V10. It has tons more power than the 5.4, costs only $600 more at retail price, and gets about the same fuel mileage as the V8. These are really heavy trucks and need a lot of engine to get them going. I get a combined 12.3 mpg cty/hwy, which, for the much addded power over the V8, is not bad in comparison. For your needs, I would get a 3.73 LS rear end, although the stock LS is not the best.
As for a diesel, in your application, it is not your best choice. Thay are best left to towing heavy loads and high mileage applications. Short hauls in town are bad in that they don't allow ample time for engine warm up. They are more expensive to maintain, especially if you are not a do it yourself-er. Not to mention the engine clatter and nauseating exhaust.
If you do choose the 5.4, Make sure you get the 4.10 rear end. You'll nead the extra gear.
My best advice would be to test drive each engine choice and find out which you like best. Good luck

I've wondered why no one had suggested the v10, but i was afraid to ask.
Also- the price sheet i have shows the 3.73lsr and the 4.10lsr at the same price. The 4.30lsr is $50 more. I was getting the 3.73lsr simply because I didn't know what the purpose in upgrading would be. Now I do.
I have my opinions and fortunately I’m able to order my truck the way I like it. Personally I think the 5.4, auto, 3.73 is more truck then you will ever need and it’ll give you the best gas mileage and you won’t have to pay extra for anything. But you should definitely test drive the different set-ups and figure out what you like best.
I just wanted to let you know about the ordering process. I just ordered a pretty much identical truck. 250 Crew SB with 5.4 L Gas, 3.73 LSR. FX4 and XLT Sport packages. A few other goodies, but I don't think they count. The dealer told me that the two big items that could slow production on your truck are the big tires and the chrome tubular step bars... part of the FX4 and Sport packages respectfully. I was told initially the time to order is 6-8 weeks, but could possibly be longer due to the 2 items mentioned above. My truck order went in last night and is already at the factory in KY. I was told BEFORE the end of March I will have my truck. I will have a more solid date next week.
As for the rebates. If you order your truck now, you do not get the rebates available now. If the dealer told you that, they either lied or didn't know what they were talking about. You get the rebates effective at the time of delivery. I know this because there was no haggling over price for my truck.
I wouldn't be too worried about the rebates, as I am sure there will be more when your truck is delivered.
Lastly, with the MPG, a buddy of mine has almost the same truck (he has a long bed) and he drive city and 4x4 with camping/fishing (on the beach too) and he averages 14mpg.
Thanks- it does help. I'll be ordering mine early next week more than likely. Dealer said if I order today, I should have the truck by the end of march. I'm just waiting on him to call me with a price. I'm dying to hear this 'better than xplan' price. And he did say the rebates would still be good when the truck gets here. Guess i'll find out next month.
I still can't thank everyone enough for the help. What i've learned here in the last couple days is amazing. Lots of great people here.
I would like to see a link to this Rebate protection program you are talking about to back your story. The only thing I found on ford's website was for Military rebate protection.
