1999 Expendition 4x4
I am planning on doing the front brakes in the next couple of weeks- inlcuding pads and rotors. I have read in other threads about how the rotors can rust in place, and I have a Chiltons to follow. My questions are:
1. Is there anything else in the front wheels/hubs that can or should be serviced? (I am used to the older locking hubs and wheel bearings)
2. I plan on buying the better quality pads and rotors at Oreilly's-does anyone have any different recommendation or specific brands? I think they carry Wagner brand.
The rotors really rust on some trucks a some they fall off.Spray lube around the lugs and behind the rotor at the hub.If you you have a air hammer go in between the lugs will usually gets them loose. If you do not have an air hammer or can't get them off with air, just hit it with a heavy hammer.I work at a dealer and i seen the rotors actually split apart before they come off.
Had one really give me a hard time on my '98. Used penetrating oil, a 2X4, a small sledge, a torch, a bigger hammer, a bigger hammer, etc.....finally got it off. I was replacing them anyway so I was not worried about damaging the rotor. They will come off but sometimes they are very stubborn. I was worried I may have damaged wheel bearings or suspension but never had any problem.
Start with a big hammer. Both sides of my "99 EB split and fell off. It took several swings, but I won the battle in the end. I removed the lugs on the first side. I had a hard time getting them to seat themselves so I left the other side in. Just be careful swinging. I used a 16# sledge. When you put the new ones on, smear some anti-seize around the inner rim so they won't stick. Good luck.

As to brake pad brands, I am currently using EBC 4x4 pads all around and Brembo OEM replacement rotors. I picked them up from www.tirerack.com and had very few problems with the site. As for braking performance, they have very little vibration from the fronts, the pads come with anti-vibration shims, and IMO great stopping power. Only downside is the brake dust that collects on the front wheels. Other than that, I like them. I would have gone with the EBC rotors, but they are quite pricy.
