Back in the day Nothing did run like a Deere, my 1949 Model B was out of time(terribley), had the the spark plug wires switched(two cylinder), and a 50% clutch, and we managed to plow a field with it. But now a days everyone is lookin over everyone else's shoulder, and everything is pretty much the same.

I don't see a John Deere engine in a Ford truck anytime soon. I heard that Bronco concept is a TURD, four cyl. diesel, with a 30 second NO2 boost, that gives you 50 hp with the push of a button, plus it looks Terrible.

The F150 with a diesel need to hit the market ASAP, just take the old 300 6cyls and convert them to diesel. The IH 6.9's were originally a gasser.

That's a little more that $.02, but it's my opinion

The 300 is tough but are the cylinder walls and head thick enough to handle 17:1 compression? Remember what happened when GM converted the 350 to diesel. My uncle had a 1977 Olds with the 350 diesel. Turd isn't harsh enough word for that car. Ford already sells trucks (Super duties) with 3.9L and 4.2L diesels. Look on the serpentine belt routing decal on your truck or look at Ford Argentina's website. There's already PCM's and everything developed to use these 2 motors, so why not use what they already have?

Come on 578!!! Argentina's south of the equator!! Those engines run clockwise, not counter- clockwise....just wouldn't work with our existing transmissions and diffs. Everything spins in the opposite direction down there.
And don't start bringing back those haunting suppressed memories either like that comment about the GM 350 diesel. Crud! Now you got me thinkin' about the Caddy V8-6-4.

Oh come on, V10! This is the easiest fix in the world! Either you can reset the time zone on them or mount the engine on backwards! 20 years in the business! Ah!
Aaaaaah the Cadillac 4.1L 4-6-8! My uncle had an 1981 Fleetwood with that very beauty in it. My uncle is a repository of crappy engines. He even had a 1978 Dodge Challenger with the stellar 1.6L I4. For every hour of driving, it needed 9 hours of maintenance, just like an M60A3 tank, but less impressive looking.

You're starting to sound like Gabe Kaplan with all these stories about your uncle.

So if I just bolt an Argentinian harmonic balancer to my flexplate I could run a 3.9 or 4.2 oil burner in my SD? Now I'd really have something to amaze those pesky PSD guys that are always making fun of my little V10.

Who the hell is Gabe Kaplan? There's no harmonics in Argentina, ever listen to some of the music down there? Hey, If FoChevroDodge had offered a 4.2L diesel I might have bought one. All I need is 190 HP & 250 ft/lb torque. I thought my 1994 300 I6 was very very powerfull. Have you ever noticed that when some poor sap asks what engine he should get:

PSD owners say "Buy a PSD, the V8 and V10 are crap"
V10 owners say "Buy a V10, the PSD and V8 are crap"
V8 owners say "My V8 is enough for me, get a V8"

Well they are all crap. How about a nice turbine? Allison 250-C20 anyone?

Oh, and also... V10's and PSD's are crap, get a V8!

578...You're making me show my age now....Gabe Kaplan? From the Welcome Back Kotter TV show in the late '70's. Started every show with the line "Did I ever tell you the story about my uncle?". Guess you had to be there....or old enough to have seen it....or watch reruns on TVLand.

All you reciprocating piston engine lovers can pound sand! Gassers! Diesels! V8's! V10's' The whole bunch of you!! The minite my wife leaves the DeLorean alone for five minutes, that Flux Capacitor's going into my SD!

As for engine preferences, especially gas V8 versus V10; Your reg cab shortbed V8 probably performs as well as, if not better than a crew cab long bed V10 considering all the extra weight the cc lb carries. It's the overall power-to-weight ratio that matters, not the powerplant itself. But, you knew that 578, this is for the others.

The main reason you see as many CAT powered vehicles is that they were designed to be in those trucks. A John Deere engine is designed A LOT heavier. It has to be heavier to handle all of the stress and load of the tractor. I think CAT's are good engines too, but designed to be in OTR trucks. I don't think John Deere will spend a bunch of time and money into designing an engine just for a few applications.
