Fuel In Oil - Engine Damage?

04 F250 4x4 Lariat Crew Cab
6.0L PSD
Build date 11/03
Engine Date: 11/05/03
Report date 2/17/04

Just received an oil report from Blackstone Laboratories. This was the first oil change @ 4,882 miles. The percentage of diesel fuel in the oil was 3.5% (value should be less than 2.0% according to Blackstone).

The engine experienced a failure of injector #5 @ 799 miles; Dealer replaced the injector but did not replace the oil.

Since the truck was driven with contaminated oil for 4,000 miles, should I be concerned about damage?

BILL: Thanks for the note of the injector failure. Fuel dilution was high in this sample and it has really lowered the viscosity (down to a light 20W). This is probably a result of the failure and should
improve considerably next sample. The high is probably from break-in of new parts, while silicon is from sealers and sand-casted parts. These findings should also improve next time and everything should be close to Universal Averages by the third or fourth oil change. No moisture or anti-freeze was present.

I would be concerned and test every change. Obviously keep the test results, in case of future engine failure. You actually had about 1/2 quart of fuel in the oil, and that small an amount might not do too much damage.

And keep all records, as well as make any notes of your thoughts at the time. You'll be surprised later, should you find that you need that information -- and the notes on your thoughts will be a source of "reminder".

My injector #5 recently was replaced at 1,500 miles - My dealer also did not change the oil. The oil looks real clean - still looks like new, yes I know looks can be decieving, but I'm not too worried about it as I intend on changing my oil early the first time out. Unless your running it HARD at this point I wouldn't be too worried at all.

I also have an observation..... It seems to me that the #5 injector is mentioned most often as being replaced. Is it just me or is my observation inline with others????

15 quarts of Rotella T or Delo 400 costs less than $40. Even if they change out your engine if it is damaged, you'll be out a ride for a long time. I'd be under it right now with the drain plug out.
