I read a lot of stuff on here about ABS. I think I might have posted a question about it, but there's a new development.
Not long after we bought the Bronco, the ABS light would sometimes stay on. We checked and it is true that when the light is on the ABS does not work. It does it only occasionally, at random (checked when hubs are locked/unlocked, etc. Doesn't seem to matter.)
Today I had a scary experience. The ABS light was on, and I came to a slow stop for a car that was turning. There was a bad shuddering when I pushed the brake pedal and the truck pulled to one side some. It did this 2 more times, once it felt like the truck wasn't going to stop and it was shuddering very bad. It almost felt like a brake pad came loose, like loose hardware or not seating right.
We just had brakes put on all around in December, so it's not a worn brake issue. Also pads seem to be intact.
I had my husband drive it around with me for a half hour, trying all kinds of braking, and it would not do it again! No problems at all.
He was wondering if one side of the ABS was engaging but the other side wasn't, causing the shuddering and pulling. Anyone ever have this happen? What else can I check?
Thanks,
-CJ
Sounds like he may hit it dead on. There is a snesor, that gets it signal from the tone ring on the back of each rotor. Check those sensors. there is also a speed sensor on the rear and front differential. Those are all known problem spots
If the ABS is activated it has to be for all 4 wheels. Because the ABS pump motor has all 4 wheel brake line running through it. When the pump motot activates it cycles all 4 wheels. It sounds more like you have a loose or sticking brake caliper. Or I have actually seen a rock get stuck in the rotor vents and lock up the wheel or at least make a horrable squeal.
See the picture below. one line goes to one pair of wheels each.
