how do i find out what kind of gears i have on my truck.. cant find anything in the glove box that says what they are. i think they might be 4:10 cause it wont go over 80 - 85, and i just did that to see what it could do. also im thinking of redoing the exhaust and have a 3" pipe all the way back. do i need a muffler or a cat. conv. and will the inspection place pass the truck if i do not have a muffler? any help would be much appreciated.
You don't need a muffler or a cat but a muffler is suggested so you don't get hassled for on overly loud vehicle. Get one of the flow through mufflers so you don't have any back pressure. What inspection place are you talking about? You don't have to smog your truck if it's a diesel.
the truck has overdrive. so it must be 4:10.
ive heard a 7.3 without a turbo and no muffler, and its loud. mine has a turbo so it wont be as loud, right? is it quite a bit quieter or a just a little? also someone said i have to have a catalytic converter. i dont know, this is my first diesel. still learning stuff every day.
My 6.9 NA was on the same exhaust system as the 7.3 turbo is now.
2 feet of 3" from the motor back to a see through muffler, then 2 more feet to a custom made Y pipe that goes to dual 3" stacks on the back side of the cab.
I used to have to roll up the window to hear a cell phone conversation, now it is easy to hear, even pulling a grade with a load on.
Do not know about the catalytic converter, mine never had one.
Look on the drivers door post, there should be a sticker with your info.Look at the axle code and post it.We can tell you from that code whats in there provided no one has changed it.
I was told that before the year 1994 you did not need a cat on a diesel engine. Thats for the state of PA emssions. But diesel trucks are emssion expemt in pa. Alls they do is look and see if ya have one. As long as yar inspection station dont give ya no trouble why bother putting one on. They dont do much of anything for the enviroment on a diesel engine.
the axle code is c9 and the trans code is e. also, i dont think my truck has a cat. conv. i talked to a muffler man in town and he said he could put a glasspack on because it flows straight through. how will that sound?
C9=Limited slip diff with 3.55 gear ratio. That is a good all around ratio.
Should be a e40d tranny. If youve got a OD button on the end of your gear shift it is e4od.
well it doesnt go like 3.55 gears. it has the button on the end of the gear shift. i cant pass anybody if they are going 55 or 60 unless i have at least 2 or 3 miles of straight road ahead of me. why wont it go. im going to have the exhaust done tomorrow for 150. maybe that will help.
See if the tags are still on the axle housing bolts. I have a 1986 F350 that the door pillar tag shows it has 4L.10s but actually came with 3L.55s. The tags on the housings show the 3L.55. No, the gears haven`t been changed. Must have been a factory miss-print (typing error) on the code.
Well i hate to dissapoint you but these rigs are made for power not speed.Hook a 5000lb trailer up to the gasser and one to your truck and you wont have to worry about keeping up with the gasser because it will be the gasser that will be watching you pull away from him.
80 to 85mph,yeah thats about it for these, but like i said you can still do it with a nice load behind you.Again slow acceleration from 55-60mph.These engines have most of their grunt in the lower gears, taking off loaded, rollin smoke, is where they shine.
