timing probs on 86 b2

hey guys yet another prob on the road to reviving my beloved bronc. ok heres whats is happening on her. i went ahead and replaced my old dis and of course i had to put some fresh gas in the tank. well rusty fired up! she ran ok, i mean the timing was way to far advanced but it was running none the less and not to bad at that. well after it warmed up she just sputterd down and died. wouldn't fire back up either. so i retarted it a few degrees and it fired back up but ran like a push mower. it literally sounded like it ran on one cylinder. wouldn't rev unless you babyied the pedel. well it finally died once again and i haven't got her to start again. so i set it on tdc and set it like that. once again only one cylinder got and power. now i'd love to fix it but i seem to be doing more harm than good when i usually have no problem on this type of work. now the timeing chane was replaced some time ago and i was wondering if the guy that was helping me couldd've timed the cam wrong. or if my fuel fillter is stopped up. but if anyone else has had this happen pls tell me how you fixed it cause she is just setting there rusting and i want to revive the truck. she only has 82k on her and i'm convinced its something simple that i'm overlooking. but if anyone here has anything that could help me out pls let me know. i'd really appreciate anything you guys can offer. have a good one and i hope you all have better luck than me with yours.

When you put the distributor back in did you have it pointing to #1 post with the #1 cylinder @ TDC?

I get the impression this truck has been sitting undriven/unstarted for a significant period of time. You already mentioned putting fresh gas in the tank. If that's the case, I wouldn't be at all surprised if one or more of the fuel injectors is clogged or otherwise not functioning properly. Maybe fuel filter's plugged with old gas varnish, or fuel pressure regulator isn't working properly.

sounds like they said, possible pluged injectors, regulator, or may be a filter. what about the plugs and wires? Had the same problem on my b2 and tured out to be the coil. I also remember having the same problem with a che*y truck out at work, turned out it was 180 off.

First check the fuel filter, next check the pumps and test for proper pressure. Double check the initial timing on the distributer and when you get it started pull the spout out and check the timing with a timing light. I have had a similar problem after replacing my distributor and had the timing off by about 45 degrees. It will run for a short time using the ECM timing but will act like you discribe.

well ken00 i timed it from tdc to start with then it 180 to see if i did it wrong and it still woulnd't run right.

shorty i do belive that my filter is atleast part of the problem as for the injectors being clogged it wouldn't surprise me but my fingers are crossed that isn't the case since really do not want to pull the upper intake and the fuel rail. as for the fpr i replaced not long ago. but the truck has beed sitting for a long time.

009 the coil is new as are the plugs and wires but i still checked my gaps and cleaned them with a copper brush. as far as being 180 off no doubt it's a deffinet posibility.

eric since iv'e started to attempt fixing it the spout has been out for that reason although i am still not making headway with the rain but do appreciate the suggestion since it's a step that a frustrated person (me lol) could easilly overlook.

overall guys i really appreciate the advice and ill double check my work. maybe i did miss something simple. lord knows i have in the past. i'll give you all updates when the rain breaks and i can do some more work to her. but pls if i sounded like i was ungratefull beleive me i am very greatfull. just frustrated with it and quite honestly confused. but do you all think that my bypassed egr (the tube corroded and broke off so i soldered it closed.) could have anthing to do with it?

Unfortunately the other thing might be the in tank(low pressure) fuel pump and suction strainer. I have pulled my hair out for almost a year with a stalling problem that just wouldn' go away after doing the intire ignition system (why I know about the spout) injectors, and fuel filter. The power wire was broken to the fuel ump and someone had rigged a jumper to the pump and it had burned up. I replaced the sender and pump as a unit and the problem has gone away.

NEWS! NEWS! THE BIG OL RUSTSY B2 (RUSTY LOL) IS BACK IN THE RACE!!!!!!!!!!! AFTER THE GROUND DRYED OUT SOME I SWAPPED THE FILLTER (WAS BLACK AND COVERD IN JELLO) AND SET THE TIMING ON TDC AND OMG SHE FIRED UP AND RAN LIKE A TOP. IT JUST PURS NOW. now to clean her up and get my tourqe back. i think that most of my tourqe is in the timing though. ill tinker with it some more later. but i wanted to know your thoughts on zmax. i got some at a hhi closeout and i wanted to know if it actually does any good or if i should invest in a high octane bottle rocket. also as for the exhaust on this back to life 4x4 do you think that just cutting out the converter and sticking a flowmaster in its place and bringing the pipes out infront of the rear tires would perform good. i need a touch of backpressure but not much. i want my low end tourqe back. but thatnk you all for the help you gave me on getting it running over the last year or so. it's been invaluble.

If there is no smog checks in your area get rid of the cat and just put a 2" pipe and a single muffler (whether dual or single exhaust), be sure and keep the O2 sensor or the engine will act out, that's more than enough back pressure for the engine to operate safely and will just allow it to breath better. STAY AWAY FROM NITROUS if that's what you mean by the bottle rocket, unless you're going to pull the engine and rebuild it. I don't know what zmax is so please enlighten me.
