I think the proportioning valve is out of whack on my 78 F-150 4x4, front disc, rear drum. The red light on the dash comes on when I'm driving and won't come on when the parking brake is set.
I've heard it can be reset and tried that, but to no avail.
I know its cast iron and may be stuck, can they be taken apart and cleaned or at least cleaned on the outside and soaked in something to free it up?
sigtauenus: Well i hate to say this but you are in a bad position
ther are no outside sources for this item & once they go they are
gone, one of the other bad sides is that no wrecking yard will or
[should not] sell you it is against the law dot that is.

try flushing the system with new fluid , adjust the rear brakes, and then , with your foot on the brake pedal , back up and firmly hit the brakes several times untill it resets ,if that doesnt do it , replace it ,bob
Turns out I had a leaky wheel cylinder...replaced both. Flushed and bled the system and was amazed at how nasty the fluid was in a supposedly sealed system.
The light is no longer on when driving the truck, so the valve did reset.
However, the light won't come on with the parking brake set. Is that normal?
I just like to have everything working on principle, and in case the wife drives it that 0.001 % of the time it gets driven.
Anyhow, my dad said the same thing about the switch, but the only switch I know about is the one mounted on the proportioning valve, and that would be the same switch giving me the light on the dash (first post) when the fluid pressure isn't balanced.
Looks like I need to dig back into that worthless Haynes manual...
