can anyone tell me the correct running temp for my engine.the factory gauge reads between 210 to 220.my aftermarket gauge reads 190 consistently.which one should i beleive?1964 model with a 292 engine
Handx2;
I'm not too sure of your factory spec's right now; will be able to let you know later; I don't have manuals at my present location; but what's your thermostat degree?;this should help others to help you know your proper temp setting.

what i would do is get a meat theromoter and sitck in the radiaor,(before you start it of course) when its up to operating temp. this will tell you which one is accurate. antoher thing you can do to make sure you running at the proper temp is to call the autoparts store and ask what thermostats they carry, if they carry one that is what your engine is running at then your all set. also, ask the guys at the y-block forum they should be able to help you out.( at least i think a 292 is a y-block)
My 64 292 runs fine with a 180 or 195 thermo-stat. What I didn't replace was the temp. sending unit, the dash gage shows a sort of general relationship to hot and cold, but that's about it. More important to replace the thermostat at least every other year, along with your coolant. T-stats are cheap, engine failure is not an option.
