Hey all just finished the install of my under bed gas tank. It fits nicely and holds 23gal. I'm thinking about writing up a tech article the only problem is I didn't take any pics. What I did is put a tank from a late 80s early 90s dodge caravan between the frame rails behind the diff in my 61 unibody long bed. I don't think this setup will work on a short bed. If anybody has any questions I'd be glad to answer. Rich.
Rich,
How is it bolted to the frame? Where does it fill from? What sending unit did you use? Is there any type of under tank guard to ward off any road debris?
OK I'll take some pics and add them to my gallery this evening. I fabricated a cradle out of 3/4" square tube and mounted that to the frame. The fill pipe goes into the tank behind the license plate and runs to the left rear stake pocket with the gas cap on the corner of the bed rail. I don't see any way to shrink the tank to fit a shortbed sorry. Rich.
I thought i was the only madman who flamed their truck with chalk.
I also write profound and often obcene quotes on it too.
My GF wont ride in it when it has a chalk paint job.
thats my nissan, I painted it flat black just for that reason... a rolling chalkboard.
kids love it.
my GF hates it.
parents fear me for doing it.
my mother expected as much.
once i drew big red white and blue letters on the side it said "***** france" and someone threw a rock at me...
people Have no sense of humor.
i wrote on the tailgate "god is a comedian playing to an audiance afraid to laugh"
and some god fearing putze threw another rock at me.
I cant win, I will stick to flames.
I drew them once backwards, that really ticked the GF off.
"its bad enoguh you use chalk, now you put flames on backwards!! thats stupid!"
no one parks near it.. I thought it was brilliant.
Rich, just got a 61 unibody the other day..its got the original 292 Y block..wanting to change motorsand maby an automatic tranny and get rid of generator also. i see you got a 302 in yours. was it hard to change over? did you get a kit or something? any help would be great..Thanks..Tom
Tom it took me about 6 months to do the mods on my truck. The most time consuming part being the volare clip. If your not going to mess with the suspension you can get a crossmember kit and install the new motor in a weekend or two.
Rich, I got to ask this,i have seen people on here talking about changing fron clips..what the heck are you guys talking about when you say changing the front clip to a volare? im guessing your just talking about the front end and not the body??is this just for updating the front axle or what???or is it the whole front frame?this sounds crazy to me,i would love to know what you guys are talking about.. Thanks..Tom
OK Tom clipping means to change the front suspension from stock by grafting a new front end to the frame of the truck. The volare style front end has transverse torsion bars and is pretty well self contained. By clipping my truck I got power steering, disc brakes, independant suspension and about 6" of drop. Common clips for our trucks are aerostar, dakota, volare, mustang II, camaro.
Go to the 48-60 furom. The moderator and regulars there have compiled an excellent source of info on several different front suspensions, including rebuilding the stock I-beam. The frame width for the older trucks is the same as the 61-64 trucks. Any info there can be used here. It all comes down to what you desire, your talents, and of course size of your wallet.
*NOTE* 53-56 trucks require adding 1"-2" to the wheelbase to "center" the wheels in the front fenders. That is specific to those models only.
Thoght i would chime in. Article in 'classic trucks magazine' installing a mustang gas tank in "61-66 F100". It is in the up coming April o4 issue. Sometimes can go to their web site tech section and read article.
