I replaced my generator with a Gm 1-wire style. I took out the regulator. The dummie light still works too. All i had to do for fabrication was to fabricate a new strap mount. I took a piece of flat stock 1" wide. Cut it and bent the tabs for the bolt to run through. I spacered (if that is even a word, but it gets the point accross) that out to hold the alternator tight. I also had to space out the front bracket that threads into the waterpump. It was fairly easy to do and most of the stuff I had laying around. I went with the GM style since I could buy one at the local parts store for about 40 bucks and it was there when i needed it.
i really want to keep my stock appearance.i`m just wondering if the regulater could be bad?it`s draining my battery.do they make generators that run higher amps?where would i get one.would i need to change the regulator as well.i`ve been reading posts by andysutts about putting a tempo alt. on,but as i said i like the stock appearance
I replaced the generator on my 64 F100 with a 1 wire alternator, and left the voltage regulator on the fender well where it was - thereby retaining the "stock" apperance. I have not heard of anyone that installed the 1 wire alternator being dissatisfied with it. It really helped keep my battery charged, and improved the starting power.
Remember the old 20 or 30 amp generator works OK, but I bet the original wiring isn't setup for subwoofers and "1000 watt" stereos and all that. I had a motor shop go over the generator and they said new high output alternators can be a source of vehicle fires in older cars and trucks - not that there's anything wrong with an alternator, but people start hanging arc welders off of their old rig and the wiring isn't setup for that. They used the minimum gauge wire they could get away with, still do I'm sure. Might be a good idea to get a modern wiring harness too if you're gonna get silly.
Me, I haven't had a problem with starting or anything, I put a new
VR in and a new battery.
Generators need periodic brush replacement though. How often I dunno.

repalcing the genator is a very simple task, and you dont need to go with the 1 wire. the genator and voltage regulator are very easy to find at any auto store. if you want to repalce the genator than go ahead and repalce the voltage cause often the regualtors dont work right. before you do anything have a place like autozone test your altenatior to see if it works, its free.
